Three toilets. You shower every three days. The food is bad. The medical conditions are bad.”

Betancort said it was so bad that he was compelled to come back standing in support of those he left behind, along with a group from the nonprofit The Workers Circle, calling for justice and for the closing of Alligator Alcatraz.

Standing alongside him was his daughter, Arianne. She has been there since her father was first detained.

“Historically, it has been proven that when people come together and they are consistent about their efforts, change will come,” said Arianne Betancort.

Many supporters came from all over the state of Florida as well as from across the country. All of them with the same hope that the whispers of a possible closure of the facility might ring true.

“Can’t be soon enough, they told us on the bus that there are 600-plus people still there, and they want us to come back next week and maybe the week after, “said Gwen McCaffrey, who was participating in a vigil near the facility. “We will be here until there is nobody in the facility.”

Florida Gov.
