In 2022, Golden State Warriors<\/a> superstar\u00a0Steph Curry<\/a>\u00a0completed a semester’s worth of work to earn his degree in Sociology from\u00a0Davidson College<\/a>\u00a0and fulfill the promise he made to his mom, Sonya, when he left school early to declare for the 2009 NBA Draft.<\/p>\n

However, because the Warriors were in the thick of the NBA playoffs, Steph was unable to attend the school’s graduation in May. However, since he is arguably the most popular alumnus of that school, they decided to hold a special graduation ceremony in which Curry was the only student to receive his college diploma.<\/p>\n

During his graduation speech, Steph admitted that at first, he felt awkward with the idea of a solo graduation.<\/p>\n

“I was trying to figure out how to really embrace this moment because my mom said, ‘I don’t know if anybody’s had a solo graduation of this magnitude before,'”\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Curry.<\/p>\n

Steph’s solo graduation was attended by a crowd of 5,000<\/p>\n

Curry attended Davidson College from 2006 to 2009, and during those three years, he became the Wildcats’ all-time leader in points, 3-pointers made, field goals made, free throws made, and steals. However, after Steph was named a consensus first-team All-American, he left school to pursue his NBA dream.<\/p>\n

Chef not only achieved his goal of making the NBA \u2014 he ended up becoming one of its best players ever and the player responsible for changing the way the game is played today with his uncanny ability to shoot the 3-pointer. That year, Curry led the Warriors to their fourth NBA championship during 8 years, and he won his first Finals MVP award.<\/p>\n

And so on August 31, 2022, Davidson College held the “Curry for 3” event at the John M. Belk arena inside the school’s campus. The graduation was attended by Steph’s parents, his wife and three kids, and an estimated crowd of 5,000. Davidson president Doug Hicks even referenced the Warriors’ recent title run during his speech.<\/p>\n

“To earn this degree, you showed determination and perseverance,”\u00a0Hicks\u00a0said.<\/a>“It would have been so easy, so straightforward to not complete your college degree. Yet in response to that idea, you did what you did to 29 other NBA organizations, you said, ‘night, night.'”<\/p>\n

Graduation was a prerequisite for having his number retired<\/p>\n

But aside from making good on his promise to Sonya, Steph also needed to finish his studies so that his jersey No.30 would be retired, as school policy mandated that only graduates could have their numbers retired.<\/p>\n

Previously, Davidson had retired the jerseys of six men’s basketball players. However, aside from retiring Curry’s jersey, the school took it a step further by retiring his number so that no one will wear 30 for Davidson Basketball again. To make the occasion a 3-part special, Davidson also chose to induct Curry to the school’s Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

“I’m a graduate,”\u00a0Curry\u00a0said\u00a0<\/a>to end his speech.\u00a0“I’m a Davidson alum, and I am in the Hall of Fame. And that’s pretty crazy.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was crazy indeed, as although there are no official records of solo graduations in Davidson history, it was a very unique and unprecedented event. But given that it was also celebrated for a once-in-a-lifetime talent, it was but fitting, even if at first Steph thought it was too much.<\/p>\n
