MILWAUKEE \u2014 The San Francisco Giants are deep in discussions with Gary Pettis to fill their third-base coach vacancy, a team source told The Athletic on Monday.<\/p>\n

Pettis, 68, would replace Hector Borg, who was reassigned Friday<\/a> after a series of questionable decisions to send or hold runners. Longtime Giants emeritus coach Ron Wotus coached third on an interim basis over the weekend at Coors Field and is expected to continue in that capacity for most, if not all, of the remaining trip.<\/p>\n

Wotus did not wish to return to a full-time position on the coaching staff.<\/p>\n

Pettis, an Oakland, Calif., native, would bring major-league experience the Giants had lacked with their on-field coaching personnel. Both Borg and first-base coach Shane Anderson were on a major-league coaching staff for the first time while serving under first-year manager Tony Vitello.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a good bet Pettis comes highly recommended from two respected former managers inside the Giants organization.<\/p>\n

The former five-time Gold Glove center fielder has served as a major-league coach for 25 seasons with five organizations, including 2015-24 with the Houston Astros when he overlapped for a time under Dusty Baker, who is currently a Giants special assistant. Pettis also coached from 2007 to 2014 with the Texas Rangers under Ron Washington, who is San Francisco\u2019s infield coach.<\/p>\n

Washington, 74, also has served with distinction as a third-base coach, but his on-field duties are being carefully curtailed because he underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery<\/a> last year. Pettis has battled his own health concerns in recent years, missing time in 2020-21 while undergoing treatments for multiple myeloma.<\/p>\n

USA Today\u2019s Bob Nightengale was first to report the Giants were hiring Pettis.<\/p>\n

Vitello said the team was \u201cdefinitely closer\u201d to announcing a third-base coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a couple twists and turns to it, so (waiting) to get to a finish line makes the most sense to feel good about something,\u201d Vitello said.<\/p>\n

Before Monday\u2019s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field, there were several new faces in the clubhouse. The Giants selected the contract of right-hander Wilkin Ramos and placed right-hander Joel Peguero on the injury list with a moderate left hamstring strain.<\/p>\n

Hot-hitting infielder Buddy Kennedy (.321 average, .424 on-base percentage, eight home runs for Triple-A Sacramento) also joined the club to provide a more potent right-handed bat off the bench. The Giants didn\u2019t have a true backup infielder after moving Casey Schmitt to left field while Heliot Ramos recovers from a moderate quad strain, and Christian Koss is on the IL with Sacramento.<\/p>\n

The Giants optioned versatile catcher Jesus Rodriguez, who had become lightly used off the bench and became a clear No. 3 in the catching rotation behind Daniel Susac and Eric Haase. To create a 40-man spot for Kennedy, the Giants designated catcher Logan Porter for assignment.<\/p>\n
