<\/p>\nChesapeake Regional Healthcare President and CEO Reese Jackson has left his position.<\/p>\n
The healthcare system said Monday in a statement that Jackson\u2019s tenure ended Saturday. No reason was given and the statement does not elaborate on the nature of his departure.<\/p>\n
Jackson had been CEO of Chesapeake Regional since 2016. He came to Chesapeake from Pennsylvania, where he had worked as president and CEO of Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville.<\/p>\n

Jackson is a defendant in a class-action lawsuit<\/a> filed by nearly 900 women that claims Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and its executives failed to stop former gynecologist and obstetrician Javaid Perwaiz from performing medically unnecessary surgeries on them. Plaintiffs claim Jackson received complaints concerning Perwaiz\u2019s conduct from senior medical staff and did not take action to suspend Perwaiz\u2019s privileges at the hospital.<\/p>\n In 2020, a federal jury found Perwaiz guilty<\/a> of 52 felony fraud charges after a federal trial in Norfolk. He was sentenced to 59 years<\/a> in prison.<\/p>\n In January 2025, a federal grand jury indicted Chesapeake Regional<\/a> on charges of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the federal government. The indictment claims the hospital allowed Perwaiz, who was arrested in 2019, to work there for about 35 years, starting in 1984, despite knowing he was performing medically unnecessary procedures that were harming patients.<\/p>\n In a statement outlining its case, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said the hospital \u201cwas complicit\u201d in a scheme that placed profits \u2014 about $18.5 million over nearly a decade \u2014 above patient welfare to obtain healthcare reimbursements for medically unnecessary procedures performed at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, the health system\u2019s 300-plus bed flagship inpatient facility on Battlefield Boulevard.<\/p>\n The case is pending an appeal filed by the Chesapeake Hospital Authority \u2014 the governing body of the hospital \u2014 asking for a dismissal of the case on the grounds of sovereign immunity. Chesapeake Regional Healthcare has denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n Amber Egyud, the healthcare system\u2019s chief operating officer and chief nursing officer, was appointed Chesapeake Regional\u2019s interim CEO. Egyud has been a health system leader since 2017. According to the statement, she played a key role in advancing the hospital\u2019s strategic growth and leading major initiatives, including development of the cancer treatment center and operational leadership throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n The Chesapeake Hospital Authority oversees the construction, operation and maintenance of Chesapeake Regional. According to the health system\u2019s website<\/a>, a meeting of the authority\u2019s executive committee is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center boardroom.
