Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a> recently opened up about one thing \u2014 making money and actually understanding it are two very different things. For many young NBA players, the first big contract does not come with a guide. It comes with a lawyer, an agent and a financial advisor. There is a belief that those three people have everything covered.<\/p>\n

That is where things get complicated. An 18-year-old signing his first deal, but has he spent time learning tax benefits or thought about long-term investments? Because the money surely comes fast. The shiny lifestyle follows just as quickly. Somewhere in the middle of that, financial decisions start getting made by people other than the athlete whose name is on the check.<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo\u2019s thought process on how to tackle this rush has been making rounds on social media for good reasons.<\/p>\n

Giannis’ advice on financial literacy<\/p>\n

The NBA superstar sat down recently for an interview with \u201cSchool of Hard Knocks.\u201d He talked about how most athletes enter the league with almost no financial foundation, which quickly turns into full dependency on the people around them.<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo\u2019s point was not that advisors and agents are the enemy. It was that handing over complete control without understanding anything yourself is where the real risk is.<\/p>\n

“You have to educate yourself. Slowly, slowly, slowly. The advice I will give to young athletes, or anybody that’s getting the space that he does not really understand.” Giannis said<\/a>. “There are two things that you can do. One, don’t ever let your lawyer, financial advisor and agent know one another, ever. Never. They should never be boys and cool, man. Because they keep one another accountable if they don’t know each other.”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s indeed a specific, practical take. Keep those three people separate, and they\u2019ll check each other without even trying. What happens if they are all in the same group chat? The accountability disappears.<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo also raised the personal education side of the career. He mentioned \u2018Rich Dad Poor Dad\u2019 and \u2018The Psychology of Money\u2019 as starting points. Not to become an expert. But to understand enough to ask better questions. That\u2019s the goal. Do not replace the advisor. Stop nodding along at things you don\u2019t actually follow.\u200b<\/p>\n

How Giannis has applied it in his own career<\/p>\n

Antetokounmpo\u2019s career investments and endorsement portfolio back everything he is talking about. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at $99.2 million. The on-court success is well documented, but the business side also stands out.<\/p>\n

His Nike Zoom Freak signature line had a good commercial run. Outside of Nike, he holds endorsement deals with Breitling, Castrol, Google, Gopuff, Johnsonville, Kalshi, Kimberly-Clark, Kohl\u2019s and many others. That\u2019s certainly a wide range. Different industries. Different audiences. Different types of brand relationships.<\/p>\n

The investment portfolio goes even further. According to Business Insider, he has invested in apparel store Antetokounbros Shop, Candy Funhouse, Antidote Health, Ready Nutrition and Greek restaurant Avli. Then, the Gold League franchise Los Angeles Gold Club, MLS club Nashville SC and MLB\u2019s Milwaukee Brewers. These indeed line up pretty well with the financial thinking he talked about.<\/p>\n

Giannis mentioned during the interview that before every major financial decision, he thinks about value and opportunity cost. Whether that ideology came from a book or from experience, it shows.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to know everything. You just need to know enough to stay in the room.<\/p>\n
