ISABELLA COUNTY, Mich. (WNEM) – Monday night, June 1, people across Michigan reported seeing a fireball across the sky.

Clear conditions allowed over 200 people to report the sighting to the American Meteor Society. Reports were filed across mid-Michigan and out of state as far south as Kentucky and Ohio.

With reports ending near Gratiot and Isabella counties, TV5’s First Alert Weather team think it is possible that there could be debris in those counties or further north.

In outer space, these rock-like objects are known as meteoroids, but once they hit earth’s atmosphere they are classified as a meteor. Most meteors burn up in the earth’s atmosphere. Every day, a large amount of meteors burn up in earth’s atmosphere. However, if meteors do make it through the atmosphere and reach earth’s surface they become a meteorite. A fireball is also a meteor, but the difference comes down to size and brightness.

In new jewelry trends, meteorite is being used in rings and other pieces.

Much of earth’s surface is covered by ocean water, so most meteorite debris falls in water or not near populated areas.

If you happened to capture video or saw the fireball, you can report it to the American Meteor Society here.
