Christopher Nolan had a very specific question for Robert Pattinson after it was announced the \u201cTwilight\u201d actor would be the next Batman.<\/p>\n

In a GQ conversation with Matt Damon and Tom Holland \u2013 who he co-stars with in \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d \u2013 Pattinson explained that the iconic director only really had one question. For Nolan, it all boiled down to the quality of the cape.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember talking to Chris when I first got the job and it was very, very secret,\u201d Pattinson said. \u201cHis first question was, \u2018So what did they make the cape out of? Just so curious, and I was like \u2018it\u2019s kind of like messed up looking.\u2019 And he was like, \u2018no no, it should always look, like, pristine. No matter if you\u2019re blown up or anything.\u2019 I was like, oh interesting I\u2019d never even thought about it. And I was like, \u2018oh I\u2019m sort of doing the opposite.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Nolan famously handled a beloved Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale \u2013 \u201cBatman Begins,\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d \u2013 so his interest in where the character went next makes sense. Pattinson starred in Matt Reeves\u2019 \u201cThe Batman\u201d and the character had a decidedly grittier and grounded feel than even Nolan\u2019s films did.<\/p>\n

The rest of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d cast have clearly enjoyed their time with the acclaimed director on set. Damon told Elle that he and Holland competed to get praise out of Nolan in the same way he complimented Zendaya\u2019s performance. It came to no avail.<\/p>\n

\u201cChris is known for being very circumspect. So when you do a take, it\u2019s not like he says, \u2018That was great.\u2019 He\u2019ll go, \u2018Yep, good. Okay.\u2019 And that is the equivalent of the greatest praise you could ever get,\u201d Damon said. \u201cZendaya, on the other hand \u2013 there were takes where she did one thing, she did this amazing scene, and he said, \u2018Cut.\u2019 And then he went, \u2018Perfect.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cAnd literally, Tom [Holland] and I were obsessed with this. She got a \u2018perfect\u2019? I\u2019ve never even gotten a \u2018great.\u2019 She got a \u2018perfect\u2019? He and I bitched about it for the entire rest of the film. \u2018Did you get anything today?\u2019 \u2018No, I got a \u2018good \u2013 moving on.\u2019 \u2018Yeah, me too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d releases in theaters on July 17, 2026. The film already\u00a0sold out several opening screenings in IMAX 70mm<\/a>\u00a0a year ahead of its release.<\/p>\n
