According to Genworth’s 2025 Cost of Care Survey, the median private room in a U.S. nursing home is now $10,798 a month. Semi-private rooms aren’t much better at $9,581. Assisted living averages $6,200.

AARP’s 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey found that 75% of adults 50 and older want to stay in their current home as they age. Most aren’t doing a thing to make that realistic.

Here’s the problem: Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 1 in 4 report falling each year. Once you’re on the floor for a day, the whole “I’ll stay in my house” plan tends to collapse fast.

Good news? Technology has caught up. There’s now a long list of tools that can help you stay safer, more connected, and more independent at home. Some are cheap. Some aren’t. All of them promise to help you beat the alternative.

Here are eight categories worth knowing about — and the specific products inside each.

1. Medical alert wearables that don’t look medical

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” was a punchline back in 1989. The push-button pendant is still around, but the category has grown up.

Brands like Medical Guardian and Bay Alarm Medical — both top-rated by the National Council on Aging — now make watch-style devices that look like normal smartwatches. UnaliWear’s Kanega Watch is another option, built specifically as a fall-detecting medical alert with a 24/7 trained operator.

If a loved one refuses to wear a clunky pendant out of vanity, that excuse is gone. The hardware finally looks like something people would wear on purpose.

2. An Apple Watch or Garmin you already wanted

You don’t necessarily need a specialty device. Apple confirms that the Apple Watch SE and Series 4 or later can detect a hard fall and automatically dial emergency services after roughly a minute of immobility.

For users 55 and older, fall detection turns on by default during setup. Garmin watches with incident detection do something similar.

The advantage over a traditional alert pendant: People actually wear smartwatches. They don’t sit in a drawer.

The downside: You have to remember to charge them.

3. Voice-controlled smart speakers

This is the cheapest category on the list, and arguably the highest-value. An Amazon Echo or Google Nest runs under $100.

Once it’s set up, you can call any contact by voice, set medication reminders, turn lights on without reaching the switch, lock the door, or ask for help — all without getting up.

The Washington Post recently profiled a 78-year-old wheelchair user who used voice command to call his adult kids when his wife had a stroke and his phone was in another room. They called 911. She got help fast.

For someone with limited mobility, that’s not a convenience. It’s a lifeline.

4. Smart switches, plugs, and wearable controllers

Here’s a common problem: Arthritic hands can’t grip a light switch. Or a wheelchair can’t get close enough to reach one. Or a senior with cognitive issues forgets to turn things off.

Aqara makes a full line of smart plugs, smart locks, motion sensors, and motorized curtain controllers.

The Lotus Ring — part of AARP’s AgeTech Collaborative — is a newer option. It’s a wearable ring that lets you point and click at wall-mounted panels to control lights and appliances. No app. No Wi-Fi setup. No fiddly touchscreen.

Quick aside — most internet financial advice comes from people who weren’t alive during the last recession. I’ve been writing about money for more than 35 years. Want rock-solid advice? Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter. Takes 10 seconds. No fluff. No spam.

5. Sensors for the things that go wrong when nobody’s watching

A stove left on. A toilet that overflowed. A pipe leaking under the sink. These problems cause fires, floods, and emergency room visits every single day.

YoLink water leak sensors are inexpensive — usually $20 to $30 apiece — and sit by sinks, toilets, and water heaters, pinging your phone the moment they get wet.

iGuard, another AgeTech Collaborative company, monitors your stove and can shut it off if you walk away or leave the house. Smart detectors for smoke and carbon monoxide round out the package.

6. Ambient monitoring systems

Some of the newest products don’t require you to wear anything at all.

Kubo Care is a radar-based device that mounts on a wall. It tracks sleep and movement and alerts caregivers if it detects a fall. MiiCare‘s small white cube is similar. It’s a virtual health assistant that uses sensors to check on the user, and it can trigger an emergency call if something seems off.

The big advantages: nothing to remember, nothing to charge, nothing to strap on every morning.

7. AI companions and robotic pets

Loneliness isn’t just sad. Researchers have linked it to dementia, depression, and earlier death. Tech can’t replace a human, but it can help.

ElliQ, made by Intuition Robotics, is a tabletop robot that initiates conversation, suggests activities, plays music, and reminds users to take medications. The New York State Office for the Aging reported a 95% reduction in self-reported loneliness among older adults in its ElliQ pilot.

Joy for All’s robotic pets are far simpler — battery-powered cats and dogs that purr, bark, and respond to touch. Sounds silly until you see how attached people get.

For grandkids who live far away, Zoom and FaceTime are still the workhorses. Don’t overlook them.

8. Smart walkers that do more than roll

Walkers used to be the dumbest piece of equipment in your house. Not anymore.

The Camino Smart Walker uses electric motors, sensors, and AI to assist going uphill, brake on the way down, and track 22 different gait metrics throughout the day.

Zeen takes a different approach — a walker that can lift a person from sitting to standing, more like a harness on wheels than a traditional rollator.

Neither is cheap. But compared to assisted living at $6,200 a month, almost anything pays for itself.

The honest bottom line

Tech won’t solve everything. If you can’t safely get out of bed, bathe, or get to the bathroom on your own, no sensor changes that. You need real human help.

But for the years before you reach that point, the right setup can stretch your independence by a lot.

The mistake I see most often: Families wait until after a crisis to put any of this in place. Don’t wait. Set up the smart speaker before you’re stuck on the bathroom floor. Buy the watch before the fall. Install the leak sensor before the flood.

And while you’re at it, knock out the cheap home upgrades for aging in place — grab bars, lever handles, secured rugs. Most of them cost under $100.

It’s a lot cheaper than the alternative.

I’ve been writing about personal finance for over 35 years, and here’s one thing I’ve seen again and…

[59
97,252,253
post-681330","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare
["GET
