This Friday, Pink Floyd celebrates the era of the 8-track with a new compilation entitled (what else?) 8-Tracks.\u00a0 The collection, available in the U.S. as a Target-exclusive CD as well as on vinyl and digitally, brings together eight (yup, eight!) tracks from the band\u2019s seventies heyday including \u201cMoney,\u201d \u201cAnother Brick in the Wall Pt. 2,\u201d \u201cWish You Were Here,\u201d and \u201cComfortably Numb.\u201d\u00a0 Steven Wilson has edited the tracks in an exclusive sequence, utilizing sound effects from the songs\u2019 original multitrack tapes to create a continuous listening experience unique to this title.\u00a0 Also exclusive is the concluding song, the full version of \u201cPigs on the Wing\u201d from the original Animals eight-track cartridge.\u00a0 This version contains a guitar solo from \u201cSnowy\u201d White which isn\u2019t present on the standard Animals LP.\u00a0 It\u2019s due from Pink Floyd Records and Sony Music.<\/p>\n

Grateful Dead is dipping into its archives for a 60th anniversary concert release going back to the band\u2019s earliest years.\u00a0 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA (7\/3\/66) arrives July 3 on 2 CDs, digital\/streaming, or 3 LPs, with the latter format exclusive to Dead.net.\u00a0 The concert, recorded by Owsley \u201cBear\u201d Stanley, previously appeared as part of the 2015 box set 30 Trips Around the Sun.\u00a0 Featuring Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron \u201cPigpen\u201d McKernan, and Bob Weir, the show has been mastered for this release by Jeffrey Norman with speed correction and restoration by Plangent Processes.\u00a0 Songs include the earliest known recordings of \u201cCardboard Cowboy,\u201d \u201cYou Don\u2019t Have to Ask,\u201d and \u201cTastebud,\u201d as well as a cover of Johnny \u201cGuitar\u201d Watson\u2019s \u201cGangster of Love.\u201d\u00a0 One song that was more enduring in the Dead\u2019s repertoire, \u201cCold Rain and Snow,\u201d is also present in an early, more uptempo arrangement.\u00a0 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA (7\/3\/66) captures the Dead on the cusp of transforming from a supercharged R&B dance band (just listen to their \u201cDancing in the Street\u201d or \u201cIn the Midnight Hour\u201d here!) into something altogether more cosmic.<\/p>\n

Yes\u2019 upcoming studio album, Aurora<\/a>, hits stores on June 12.\u00a0 But even as the band looks forward, it\u2019s looking back, too, with the latest archival release from Rhino.\u00a0 The 50th anniversary release Live at Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, 17 June 1976 takes listeners back to the long-gone New Jersey venue for the concert broadcast on WNEW-FM and bootlegged countless times since.\u00a0 It will be available on 2 CDs or 3 LPs, including an edition exclusive to Rhino.com with a Roger Dean lithograph and a \u201cSpirit of \u201876\u201d edition exclusive to independent record stores as part of Rhino\u2019s summer campaign.\u00a0 The show boasts such Yes favorites as \u201cSiberian Khatru,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve Seen All Good People,\u201d and \u201cRoundabout,\u201d as well as a cover of The Beatles\u2019 \u201cI\u2019m Down.\u201d\u00a0 This marks the concert\u2019s first official appearance.<\/p>\n

Hot on the heels of the release of Zappa \u201966<\/a>, UMe and Zappa Records are dipping into the more recent past for the vinyl debut of the 2016 compilation ZAPPAtite (Frank Zappa\u2019s Tastiest Tracks).\u00a0 The 18-track collection is sequenced in the manner of a meal, with tracks representing Appetizers (\u201cDancin\u2019 Fool,\u201d \u201cPeaches En Regalia\u201d), Entrees (\u201cValley Girl,\u201d \u201cTell Me You Love Me\u201d), a Second Course (\u201cDon\u2019t Eat the Yellow Snow,\u201d \u201cTitties and Beer\u201d) and Dessert (\u201cZoot Allures,\u201d \u201cStrictly Genteel\u201d) \u2013 one course per side of vinyl.\u00a0 Collectively, these tracks encompass some of the late composer-guitarist-sonic auteur\u2019s most accessible recordings while simultaneously sampling the many flavors of his work: blues, jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, doo-wop, psychedelia, classical, and beyond.\u00a0 The CD is being re-pressed for the occasion, while vinyl editions include standard black and pink swirl vinyl (the latter exclusive to Universal storefronts including Zappa.com<\/a>); both LPs boast gatefold artwork and a menu-styled insert.\u00a0 It\u2019s due on July 17.<\/p>\n
