{"id":682833,"date":"2026-06-04T00:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T00:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/682833\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T00:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T00:24:08","slug":"new-doc-recasts-marilyn-monroe-through-her-endo-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/682833\/","title":{"rendered":"New doc recasts Marilyn Monroe through her endo battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new documentary about endometriosis, \u201cEnd of the Cycle,\u201d starring Amy Schumer, Julianne Hough and more, says we should reframe our understanding of Marilyn Monroe in terms of her silent battle with the debilitating condition.<\/p>\n<p>The film icon had multiple miscarriages, \u201cmystery\u201d hospital trips and was labeled \u201cdifficult\u201d \u2014 all things likely related to the painful disease, according to the movie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way she\u2019s been portrayed all these years has not been accurate,\u201d co-director Sammy Jaye said during a screening at the Whitby Hotel.\u00a0\u201cIf anyone mentions Marilyn Monroe in a negative way, you can revert back to this and know that she was going through [the disease] at a time when she couldn\u2019t have said anything, and there wasn\u2019t social media,\u201d noting how the legendary \u201cGentlemen Prefer Blondes\u201d star would have struggled alone.<\/p>\n<p>Marilyn Monroe\u2019s struggle with endometriosis is covered in a new doc called \u201cEnd of the Cycle.\u201d Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Her diagnosis was confirmed in the 1985 book \u201cGoddess.\u201d  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Jaye, who also has endometriosis, noted Monroe\u2019s 100th birthday was on Monday, saying, \u201cYou look at what has and hasn\u2019t changed over the past 100 years with treatments and medicines \u2026 not much has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disease \u2014 in which tissue similar to the uterus\u2019s inner lining grows outside of the uterus, causing intense pain \u2014 has no cure and cannot be diagnosed without surgery. Some 200 million are estimated to have endometriosis.<\/p>\n<p>The writer of the 1985 book \u201cGoddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe,\u201d Anthony Summers, confirmed her diagnosis through her doctor. He writes,\u00a0\u201cThe condition was so severe that it destroyed her marriages, her wish for children, her career and ultimately her life. In days before effective conservative surgery or effective medical therapies, it led to progressively increasing use of strong analgesics, tranquilisers and hypnotics \u2014 and drug dependency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Co-director Sammy Jaye asks viewers to take into account that Monroe was suffering silently and without support. Baron<\/p>\n<p>The doc follows six women as they battle with the incurable disease. Getty Images for The Endometriosis Collective<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, covered in the film, Monroe taped a pleading note on her stomach to her doctor before undergoing an appendectomy in April 1952 reading, \u201cSave please (I can\u2019t ask enough) what you can \u2014 I\u2019m in your hands.
