(Photo by Tim Carpenter\/Kansas Reflector)<\/p>\n<p>By:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/author\/mchilson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morgan Chilson<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/2025\/02\/24\/gov-laura-kelly-skeptical-kansas-houses-anti-tenure-legislation-will-reach-her-desk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas Reflector<\/a><\/p>\n<p>TOPEKA \u2014 A Kansas healthcare leader and a U.S. Representative are questioning why funding needed to continue essential scientific research isn\u2019t being paid out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than halfway through fiscal 2026, the National Institutes of Health has allocated only 33% of the $26 billion it normally awards to universities,\u201d wrote University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod with Ron Daniels, Johns Hopkins University president, in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/get-the-federal-science-money-flowing-ec14cdbf?st=BiNSb4&amp;reflink=article_copyURL_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wall Street Journal column in May<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Rep. Sharice Davids teamed with 38 national legislators to ask Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, about staffing shortages slowing distribution of research funding that had already received congressional approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese delays are not abstract.
