\n\tMoviegoers are scrambling to reserve their seats for \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>,\u201d and the mad dash to see what Christopher Nolan<\/a> has cooked up is hitting some unexpected hurdles. <\/p>\n

\n\tDemand for Imax and other premium large format screenings of the adventure epic appears to be so high that AMC<\/a>\u2018s ticketing app paused briefly. Sales have resumed, but wait times are up to an hour. On social media, users complained about the difficulty of reserving tickets for the format. Nolan is a passionate advocate for Imax and used the company\u2019s proprietary cameras to shoot \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d so it\u2019s clear how he wants his new film to be seen. Imax and PLF screenings went on sale on Thursday, triggering the rush to buy seats. AMC isn\u2019t alone \u2014 Fandango\u2019s website also appeared to be dragging with users experiencing long wait times.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast summer, opening weekend screenings of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d in Imax 70mm were made available and quickly sold out. That\u2019s almost unheard of for a movie to start offering seats that far in advance, but because of Nolan\u2019s proselytizing, fans travelled across state lines to see his previous film, \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d in that format.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d hits theaters on July 17. It carries a production budget of $250 million and boasts an A-list ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. Universal is releasing the film, which is expected to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. The film is a re-telling of Homer\u2019s poem about Odysseus\u2019 long journey home. It\u2019s a quest that\u2019s nearly as daunting as finding tickets to an opening night 70mm Imax screening of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut there\u2019s a reason moviegoers trust Nolan, whose immersive films are offering something distinctive at a time when theaters are filled with superhero sequels and franchise fare. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I\u2019m writing, I\u2019m visualizing the film as an audience member, as somebody experiencing the story,\u201d Nolan told \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in a recent interview. \u201cThen, when I direct the story, I\u2019m trying to take the audience there. So, in the case of\u00a0\u2018The Odyssey,\u2018\u00a0I\u2019m trying to put the audience into that horse. I\u2019m trying to put them on the deck of Odysseus\u2019s ship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s not unheard of for ticketing demand to crash AMC\u2019s website. Something similar happened with the 2023 release of Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cEras Tour\u201d concert film and again in 2025 for the singer\u2019s film, \u201cShowgirl.\u201d AMC is the world\u2019s largest exhibition chain and has the most Imax screens in the United States.<\/p>\n

\n\tA spokesperson for AMC declined to comment.
