{"id":685783,"date":"2026-06-05T10:38:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T10:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/685783\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T10:38:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T10:38:25","slug":"a-mysterious-quantum-compass-may-be-hiding-inside-pigeons-livers-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/685783\/","title":{"rendered":"A Mysterious Quantum Compass May Be Hiding Inside Pigeons&#8217; Livers : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long before the arrival of internet messengers, pigeons were prized and bred for their ability to find their way back home across vast distances, a message tied to their leg.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of &#8216;pigeon post&#8217; to human culture is evidenced as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/ancient-egypt-pigeon-problem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1350 BCE<\/a>, when they were depicted in ancient Egyptian art.<\/p>\n<p>For centuries, these birds were our most reliable form of long-distance communication.<\/p>\n<p>Until the telegram was invented, homing pigeons (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homing_pigeon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Columba livia domestica<\/a>) were tasked with carrying countless important business deals, love letters, and war reports that changed the course of human history.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/500px-Abfertigen_einer_Meldung_durch_Brieftauben_-_CH-BAR_-_3240471_-_restoration.jpg\" alt=\"A Mysterious Quantum 'Pull' From Within May Help Guide Pigeons Home\" width=\"500\" height=\"706\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203609\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Swiss Army soldiers dispatch a message by carrier pigeon during World War I. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Abfertigen_einer_Meldung_durch_Brieftauben_-_CH-BAR_-_3240471_-_restoration.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swiss Federal Archives\/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 ch<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>But despite our long dependence on these brilliant birds, we actually don&#8217;t know what makes their homing skills so darn accurate, or where in their body this powerful internal compass lies.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, scientists have suspected pigeons, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/birds-have-a-quantum-sense-and-for-the-first-time-scientists-see-it-in-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other birds and animals<\/a>, could be relying on the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bird-brains-can-sense-magnetic-fields-with-the-flick-of-a-switch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to guide them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a team from the University of Bonn and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPIAB) in Germany have the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What looks like a &#8216;gut feeling&#8217; in bird navigation may actually have a physical basis,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/26511515\/pigeons-navigate-using-magnetic-sensors-in-their-livers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> biologist Martin Wikelski, director at MPI-AB and a senior author on the paper.<\/p>\n<p>The homing pigeon&#8217;s internal compass, it seems, may lie in their liver, with its high concentration of iron.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had some clues that the liver and spleen have magnetic properties, because they break down red blood cells and so store much iron in the body,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/26511515\/pigeons-navigate-using-magnetic-sensors-in-their-livers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> immunologist Clivia Lisowski from the University of Bonn.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the team suspected it was the iron-laden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/watch-immune-cells-caught-on-video-eating-live-skin-cancer-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">macrophages<\/a> \u2013 specialized white blood cells \u2013 in the liver playing a role in navigation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/original-2-642x642.jpeg\" alt=\"A Mysterious Quantum 'Pull' From Within May Help Guide Pigeons Home\" width=\"642\" height=\"642\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-203605\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An electron microscopy image of pigeon liver tissue shows a hepatic macrophage (blue) in contact with a nerve fiber (yellow), which enables them to transmit &#8220;magnetic&#8221; information to the pigeon brain. (Lisowski et al., Science, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s even weirder is that these macrophages possess a quantum property, called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superparamagnetism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">superparamagnetism<\/a>, which may be acting as a compass &#8216;needle&#8217; in a surprisingly literal sense.<\/p>\n<p>The pigeons have all the machinery they&#8217;d need to &#8216;read&#8217; this compass: By looking at pigeon liver tissue closely under a microscope, the researchers found nerve fibers capable of carrying signals from the macrophages all the way to the pigeon brain.<\/p>\n<p>The Sun offers the pigeons a pretty clear navigational marker most of the time, but these internal, quantum liver compasses could be especially important on overcast days, the researchers thought.<\/p>\n<p>To test that theory, the researchers took 34 homing pigeons on a test run, 19 kilometers (12 miles) from their home at MPIAB, to see how well they could find their way back under overcast conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780655903_920_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>A day before taking flight, 18 pigeons were given a shot of clodronate, a drug that wipes out macrophages, thereby destroying the connection between these immune cells in the pigeons&#8217; livers, and the neurons that relay signals to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Pigeons that hadn&#8217;t been given clodronate arrived home within 70 minutes of release.<\/p>\n<p>But those who had been disconnected from their quantum liver compass?<\/p>\n<p>They were totally lost.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;None of the clodronate-treated birds returned on the same day under persistent overcast conditions, instead displaying random spatial orientation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.ady2486\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the authors report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, once the weather cleared and the Sun shone once again, the clodronate-treated pigeons homed normally, with their flight capability, motivation, and general health intact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-201722 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Repeating this experiment on a sunny day, the pigeons treated with clodronate had no trouble finding their way home, which suggests the &#8216;internal compass&#8217; in their liver may indeed be most important when there&#8217;s no Sun to guide the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-sense-in-animals-could-be-shockingly-close-to-quantum-limits\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Many animals<\/a> manage to navigate immense distances without a map to guide them: sharks in the dark, deep ocean; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/variations-in-earth-s-magnetic-field-serve-as-stop-signs-for-migratory-birds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">migratory birds<\/a> that traverse continents;
