President Trump said he would hold a rally in Washington with performances from the country singer Lee Greenwood and the tenor Christopher Macchio after most artists dropped out of a series of concerts<\/a> planned by a Trump-backed group in honor of the 250th anniversary of American independence.<\/p>\n

Last week, Young MC, Martina McBride, the Commodores, Morris Day and Bret Michaels were among the musicians who canceled their performances shortly after they were announced by the group, Freedom 250. They had been scheduled to perform on the National Mall<\/a> between June 25 and July 10 as part of the Great American State Fair, which the announcement described as a \u201cWorld\u2019s Fair-style celebration\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump said in a post on social media<\/a> on Thursday that his rally would be held on June 24, the day before the official start of the fair, and would also include military band performances.<\/p>\n

He called Mr. Greenwood\u2019s patriotic anthem \u201cGod Bless the U.S.A.,\u201d which has been a fixture at Mr. Trump\u2019s political rallies, \u201cone of the greatest hits of all time.\u201d He also likened Mr. Macchio to Luciano Pavarotti and said he would sing \u201cNessun dorma,\u201d \u201cAve Maria\u201d and \u201cGod Bless America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be special at every level,\u201d the president wrote. \u201cA Rally to end all Rallies!\u201d<\/p>\n

The turmoil surrounding the concerts<\/a> and the fair reflects long-brewing confusion and partisan tensions around official plans for the anniversary \u2014 which in recent days have left artists, talent managers and many ordinary Americans confounded.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump created Freedom 250 in December to organize the administration\u2019s 250th initiatives. It is operating separately from America250, the nonprofit group connected with the bipartisan United States Semiquincentennial Commission that was established by Congress in 2016<\/a> to lead the commemoration.<\/p>\n

Freedom 250, a subsidiary of the nonprofit National Park Foundation, describes itself as nonpartisan<\/a>. But the group has been criticized<\/a> for offering access to Mr. Trump and other perks to big-dollar donors, and for what some Democrats and advocacy groups have said is a<\/a> lack of transparency<\/a> around its use of taxpayer funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the concert announcement by Freedom 250 last week, artists began dropping out, with some saying the event was not what they had expected it to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,\u201d Ms. McBride, a country star, wrote on social media<\/a>. Young MC, the rapper behind the 1989 hit \u201cBust a Move,\u201d wrote on social media<\/a>, \u201cThe artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear whether any of the previously announced musical performances on the National Mall would go forward. Some artists had not canceled \u2014 the rapper Flo Rida has not spoken publicly about it, and another, Vanilla Ice, said he would perform for anyone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll go play for Putin, and I\u2019ll play in Iran if you want,\u201d he said in an interview with TMZ<\/a>. \u201cIt don\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump said in his post that all the artists were told \u201cto stay home.\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Three people representing artists who were approached for the Freedom 250 concerts described a slapdash process that came together just days before the announcement. They spoke to The New York Times on condition of anonymity because they were concerned about political blowback.<\/p>\n

The artists\u2019 representatives said they had been contacted by intermediaries who invited artists to appear at an event on the National Mall that would be sponsored by the Agriculture Department and would celebrate the American farmer. They were explicitly told that the event was nonpartisan, these people said.<\/p>\n

But the Great American State Fair announcement on May 27 seemed to take the artists\u2019 teams by surprise \u2014 with Freedom 250 mentioned for the first time, they said.<\/p>\n

In response to questions from The Times, Freedom 250 called President Trump \u201cthe visionary behind the Great American State Fair\u201d and said he would \u201cpersonally kick off this historic celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The organization did not address whether any of the previously announced concerts would still take place.<\/p>\n

President Trump has long taken an interest in the country\u2019s 250th anniversary<\/a>, which he sees as an opportunity to promote his view of patriotic history. Soon after returning to office in January 2025, he created a special White House task force<\/a> for the anniversary and also moved to install allies at America250.<\/p>\n

Since 2022, America250 has been led by Rosie Rios, a former top Treasury official in the Obama administration, who first became a member of the commission in 2018.<\/p>\n

In September, the commission fired Mr. Trump\u2019s recently hired executive director,<\/a> Ari Abergel, a former Fox News producer and veteran of the first Trump White House, after he used the group\u2019s social media accounts to post messages about the death of Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n

In December, Mr. Trump announced the formation of Freedom 250 to raise funds for and organize his signature projects, including a prayer event on the National Mall<\/a>, an IndyCar race around Washington<\/a> and the Freedom Trucks<\/a>, a fleet of mobile history museums created in partnership with Hillsdale College and the conservative media platform PragerU.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump first teased the Great American State Fair<\/a> on the campaign trail in 2023. In February, it was confirmed that the event would take place on the Mall, displacing a planned special edition of the Smithsonian Institution\u2019s Folklife Festival<\/a>, which had been held there annually since 1967.<\/p>\n

Freedom 250 has not released full details about the fair, which is being organized in coordination with the Agriculture Department and the Interior Department, which oversees the Mall. But a video rendering released in April shows the Mall ringed by Beaux-Arts-style pavilions<\/a> and dominated by a 110-foot Ferris wheel.<\/p>\n

All 56 states and territories have been invited to have their own 900-square-foot booths to showcase their contributions to the country. In addition to performance stages, the fair will also feature \u201cdaily themed programming celebrating American history, innovation, culture, faith, military service, education, wellness, and the future of the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freedom 250 said on Friday that the fair would include \u201cindustry displays, family-friendly attractions and movie screenings, musical performances, military ensembles, incredible flyovers and an iconic Ferris wheel on the National Mall.\u201d<\/p>\n

America250 has continued with its own efforts, including a planned July 4 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The group\u2019s website promises \u201cmajor musical acts and patriotic tributes\u201d; on Friday, a spokesman said the lineup would be announced \u201cvery soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Ms. Rios, the group\u2019s chair, emphasized its congressional mandate to \u201crepresent all 350 million Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica250 will continue to focus on the values-based programming<\/a> approved by our bipartisan commission at the local, state, national and international levels, including once-in-a-lifetime celebratory moments during the 4th of July weekend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are supportive of the many other organizations planning events for the 250th at the federal, state and local level,\u201d she continued, \u201cso all Americans have ample opportunities to join in the celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n
