Evanescence<\/a> frontwoman Amy Lee<\/a> has heard her band described as many things over the years, and she\u2019s learned to live with most of them. But there\u2019s one tag she\u2019s got particularly strong feelings about \u2013 and not in a good way.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively in the brand new issue of Metal Hammer<\/a>, the singer, whose band released their highly anticipated sixth studio album, Sanctuary, on June 5, looks back on the band\u2019s 2003 debut single, Bring Me To Life<\/a>, which saw the band categorised as both goth and nu metal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I never liked that word,\u201d Amy tells Hammer of the idea her band were goth. \u201cI was like an alt rock, ripped-up jeans kind of girl. The word goth [to describe Evanescence\u2019s music] is stupid. I hate that word.\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds that she\u2019s not hugely enamoured with the \u2018nu metal\u2019 tag, but is less annoyed by it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that word is particularly modern, but I don\u2019t really care,\u201d she says of the nu metal description. \u201cLabels are labels, whatever you want to call it, is fine. We know who we are, and where we\u2019ve come to is full of so much amazing growth, but it\u2019s also full of, like, respecting where we came from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Amy admits that it hasn\u2019t escaped her that music from the early 2000s have had a resurgence in the last few years. and she\u2019s glad Evanescence are part of the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s natural, at this sort of 20-year mark, for throwback vibes and nostalgia to hit,\u201d she muses. \u201cThere is so much interesting innovation in rock and metal today, it has come so far from where it was back then\u2026 the rules are out the window.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the interview, she also touched on the fact that Evanescence have never headlined the Main Stage at Download<\/a>, despite pulling a huge crowd when they headlined the Second Stage in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had been asked to headline it, I would\u2019ve headlined it,\u201d she says. \u201cMaybe next year!\u201d<\/p>\n
