\n\tTo give into the hive mind or not?<\/p>\n
\n\tIn \u201cPluribus<\/a>,\u201d book author Carol (Rhea Seehorn<\/a>) and 11 other strangers are the only individuals left on Earth after everybody else mysteriously merges into what is called the hive mind \u2013 a collective joining of consciousness.<\/p>\n \n\tSix months since the acclaimed first season finished airing on Apple TV, cast members Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, Carlos Manuel Vesga and Samba Schutte are still debating their take \u2014 and their characters\u2019 choices \u2014 when it comes to life in a world where almost everyone is a part of the same hive mind.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI love how [Mr. Diabat\u00e9 has] the valid counterpoints to Carol\u2019s arguments,\u201d Schutte told Variety\u2018s executive TV editor Michael Schneider during a recent \u201cPluribus\u201d Variety x Apple TV screening and conversation. \u201cIt\u2019s true, as annoying as he might be, he has valid counterpoints. There\u2019s no racism in the world, there\u2019s no discrimination, there\u2019s no war, there\u2019s no crime. We can have whatever we want, we can be whatever we want. Isn\u2019t this the world we all wanted?\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no consent! It\u2019s fine,\u201d Seehorn added with a laugh.<\/p>\n \n\tExecutive producer Gordon Smith, who also worked with show creator Vince Gilligan on \u201cBetter Call Saul,\u201d touched on the disconnect between Carol and the rest of the survivors: \u201cGet 11 people in the world that you know right now in a room, see if you can get them to agree on something. It\u2019s a challenge and I feel that\u2019s one of the things the show is about \u2013 what a huge distance it is from me to you. What a huge distance it is to just talk to somebody and be outside yourself and see the world from their point of view. It\u2019s almost an incommensurable distance.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe cast dug into how they approached playing their respective characters, and what drew them to the show. Seehorn said, \u201cI loved playing with that idea of this woman\u2019s anger [having] horrific consequences in the world, and I found that very interesting. But it is also a bit of a superpower.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tVesga said of playing the stubborn survivor Manousos (who is Colombian, but lives in Paraguay): \u201cI keep coming back to the fact that he has lost his world once. He had to leave his country for another country and his identity was left behind once before. So this time, he\u2019s not willing to let that happen again. He\u2019s not willing to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tSchneider then asked the cast to dive into their burning questions. \u201cI wonder if Carol lost a child before everything?\u201d Vesga said, much to the shock of Seehorn. \u201cI wonder if that\u2019s why Helen puts up with her to begin with.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe good news for \u201cPluribus\u201d fans is that a Season 2 is on the way, meaning some burning questions will soon be answered.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cWe are working as hard as we can and as fast as we can, which isn\u2019t very fast, but it is the best we can do,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe are writing, we\u2019re about midway through Season 2, breaking it. We\u2019re doing the best we can and we\u2019re hoping to get back to work shooting sometime hopefully by the end of this year or early next year.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"To give into the hive mind or not?
