The NCAA has denied Texas Tech\u2019s<\/a> request to reinstate Brendan Sorsby\u2019s<\/a> eligibility, The Athletic\u2019s Justin Williams reported<\/a>. Friday\u2019s decision is separate from his lawsuit against the NCAA, which is awaiting a ruling in Lubbock District Court.<\/p>\n

Sorsby entered rehab last month after taking an immediate leave of absence from the Texas Tech football program. On3\u2019s\u00a0Pete Nakos<\/a>\u00a0reported the former\u00a0Cincinnati<\/a>\u00a0quarterback placed\u00a0thousands of bets<\/a>\u00a0on gambling apps in recent years, including on\u00a0Indiana<\/a>\u00a0football when he was redshirting as a true freshman in 2022.<\/p>\n

The denial, which was expected, is part of the NCAA\u2019s process regarding Sorsby\u2019s future. Meanwhile, the legal battle continues in the courtroom after a hearing earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Texas Tech filed its appeal<\/a> to the NCAA late last month after the association ruled him ineligible amid allegations of gambling. The university recommended the NCAA impose a two-games suspension for Sorsby, who took a leave of absence to receive treatment for gambling addiction.<\/p>\n

Should the NCAA give Sorsby a two-game suspension, Texas Tech said the association could send \u201can important signal to current and future student-athletes that seeking treatment for an addiction does not have to mean ruining your future,\u201d according to the appeal. If Sorsby receives the maximum penalty \u2013 the loss of his eligibility \u2013 the university argued the NCAA could help others who are \u201cquietly\u201d dealing with addictions.<\/p>\n

Where Brendan Sorsby\u2019s legal battle stands<\/p>\n

During the hearing, Brendan Sorsby\u2019s attorney Jeffrey Kessler argued<\/a> the NCAA is inconsistent with its enforcement of its gambling rules. He cited a case involving former Indiana<\/a> assistant volleyball coach Brett Agne, who allegedly played more than 700 wagers \u2013 which totaled more than $327,000 \u2013 during a five-month period while working at IU. That includes wagers 27 football and men\u2019s basketball games.<\/p>\n

Agne received a two-year show-cause order with mandatory sports betting education and a 10-game suspension, which took up about 30% of Indiana\u2019s season. The punishment was part of a negotiated resolution.<\/p>\n

Since Monday\u2019s hearing, it\u2019s been a waiting game while the court weighs a decision. Speaking Wednesday at the San Antonio QB Club, Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire<\/a> said a ruling could come any day<\/a>, but said he expects an answer by June 8.<\/p>\n
