NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters) – Sunday\u2019s Tony Awards cap a record Broadway season, with no clear frontrunner among the leading nominees and a mix of \u200cstar-driven shows and new works signaling sustained momentum for the New York theater industry.<\/p>\n
Pop \u200csinger Pink will host the ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York starting at 8 p.m. ET on \u200bSunday (0000 GMT on Monday) on CBS.<\/p>\n
New musicals \u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d lead all nominees with 12 nods each, followed by the revival \u201cRagtime\u201d with 11.<\/p>\n
Alongside leading contenders \u201cThe Lost Boys\u201d and \u201cSchmigadoon!,\u201d \u201cTitan\u00edque\u201d and \u201cTwo Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)\u201d have built strong followings, making the best musical category one of the most competitive in \u200crecent memory.<\/p>\n
This year Broadway generated $1.91 billion \u2060in grosses, the highest total on record, as audiences turned out for both established hits and new productions.<\/p>\n
For best play, Pulitzer Prize winner \u201cLiberation\u201d by Bess \u2060Wohl enters with momentum, but David Lindsay-Abaire’s \u201cThe Balusters\u201d has emerged as a formidable challenger after winning top honors at the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards.<\/p>\n
The best musical revival race appears to be \u200ba two-show \u200bcontest between a sweeping production of \u201cRagtime\u201d and \u201cCats: The \u200bJellicle Ball,\u201d a ballroom-inspired reinvention of Andrew \u200cLloyd Webber\u2019s musical.<\/p>\n
The acting races feature a mix of Broadway veterans and Hollywood stars, including Nathan Lane, John Lithgow and Daniel Radcliffe, underscoring theater’s continued ability to attract major screen talent.<\/p>\n
Adding to the season’s intrigue was the announcement the revival \u201cChess\u201d will close early after its leading lady Lea Michele was passed over for a nomination.<\/p>\n
All seven nominees for best musical and best musical revival \u200cwill perform during the broadcast.<\/p>\n
The ceremony will also feature \u200banniversary celebrations for \u201cChicago,\u201d which marks 30 years on Broadway with \u200ba tribute led by Queen Latifah, \u200band \u201cThe Book of Mormon,\u201d whose original cast will reunite for the musical’s 15th \u200canniversary.<\/p>\n
Rachel Zegler, who will be coming back to \u200bBroadway next season in \u200bthe Jamie Lloyd production of \u201cEvita,\u201d will perform a tribute to \u201cA Chorus Line\u201d for its 50th anniversary, and Leslie Odom Jr. will do a song from \u201cRent\u201d for that show\u2019s 30th anniversary.<\/p>\n
Tony-winning actor \u200bLaura Benanti and Emmy-nominated actor Tituss \u200cBurgess will host the preshow, where the creative arts Tony Awards honoring designers, \u200btechnicians and other behind-the-scenes theater artists will be presented.<\/p>\n
