Everblades fall 6-0 to Mavericks in Kelly Cup Finals opener<\/p>\n

Florida suffered its most lopsided loss of the postseason Friday night as Kansas City seized control early and never looked back.<\/p>\n

The two best teams in the ECHL all season long finally met Friday night, but Game 1 of the Kelly Cup Finals belonged entirely to the Kansas City Mavericks.<\/p>\n

The Florida Everblades fell 6-0 at Cable Dahmer Arena, dropping the opening game of the championship series in a performance that looked uncharacteristically flat from start to finish.<\/p>\n

For the first time in 14 playoff games, the Everblades failed to score the opening goal, a trend that has fueled much of their postseason success. Instead, Kansas City struck early in the first period and never allowed Florida to find its footing.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks added another goal before the opening frame came to a close, marking the first time all postseason that the Everblades trailed by multiple goals in a game.<\/p>\n

Kansas City continued to build on its advantage in the second period, adding four goals, turning the finals opener into an offensive showcase. The six goals allowed were the most surrendered all season by ECHL Goaltender of the Year Cam Johnson, who was repeatedly called upon to clean up dangerous opportunities created by the Mavericks’ attack.<\/p>\n

Florida’s typically reliable defensive structure struggled to contain Kansas City’s speed and pressure, allowing open lanes and quality scoring chances that the Everblades have largely avoided giving up throughout their playoff run.<\/p>\n

Offensively, the Everblades never found an answer. Key contributors such as Anthony Romano, Carson Gicewicz and Oliver Chau were unable to generate sustained pressure as Florida finished with just 15 shots on goal. According to the Everblades, Kansas City outshot the Blades 26-15 and controlled the pace for much of the evening.<\/p>\n

The shutout loss ties the largest postseason defeat in franchise history, matching last year’s 6-0 loss to Trois-Rivi\u00e8res in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.<\/p>\n

Despite the disappointing result, the series is far from over.<\/p>\n

The Everblades have built their reputation on resilience, and head coach Brad Ralph’s group will have an immediate opportunity to respond in Game 2 Saturday night before the series shifts back to Southwest Florida.<\/p>\n

There is also precedent for a comeback. When the Everblades captured their first Kelly Cup championship in franchise history in 2012, they opened the finals with a road loss to the Las Vegas Wranglers before rattling off four consecutive victories to secure the title.<\/p>\n

Florida will now look to follow a similar path as it attempts to bounce back and even the series before returning home.<\/p>\n
