There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a large earthquake that shook Mindanao in the Philippines, according to the National Weather Service\u2019s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu.<\/p>\n
The earthquake has been downgraded from a magnitude of 8.2 to 7.8.<\/p>\n
PTWC reported that a tsunami threat exists for portions of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake, but there is no longer a threat to the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n

A tsunami threat to Hawaii is being evaluated this afternoon after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao in the Philippines, according to the Oahu Department of Emergency Management.<\/p>\n
The earthquake that shook Mindanao happened at about 1:38 p.m. today.<\/p>\n
\u201cA tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake, but it is still early to determine whether there is a possible tsunami threat to Hawaii,\u201d according to a message from the National Weather Service in Honolulu.<\/p>\n
The earliest estimated time the hazard might begin would be 11:57 p.m. today if a tsunami does occur, according to the alert.<\/p>\n
