{"id":691584,"date":"2026-06-08T12:57:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T12:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/691584\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T12:57:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T12:57:08","slug":"main-line-health-could-go-out-of-network-with-unitedhealthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/691584\/","title":{"rendered":"Main Line Health could go out of network with UnitedHealthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Chris Feaster sees <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/main-line\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Main Line<\/a> Health clinicians for mammograms, breast MRIs, and other preventive screenings required due to her high risk of breast cancer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 61-year-old <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/montgomery-county\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montgomery County<\/a> resident has been panicked in recent weeks after Main Line sent patients a letter warning that the nonprofit health system\u2019s contract with her insurer, UnitedHealthcare, may end later this month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Main Line is a leading provider of care across Philadelphia\u2019s western suburbs, where it has four hospitals. Feaster has relied on its facilities for care for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThey know me,\u201d she said of her Main Line providers in an interview. \u201cI have been getting monitored there since the time I was in my early 30s.\u201d . <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feaster, who lives in Trooper, has already experienced a healthcare disruption caused by another insurance dispute. Two years ago, Axia Women\u2019s Health and United failed to reach adeal. That forced Feaster to find a new gynecologist after 40 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">If no deal is reached by June 30, Feaster could be facing a repeat. She is among 32,000 affected Main Line patients who have United insurance through Medicare Advantage plans and commercial insurance from employers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It\u2019s not unusual for health systems and insurers to go down to the wire when negotiating contracts, but Axia\u2019s failure to reach a deal \u2014 and the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/jefferson-lehigh-valley-health-unitedhealthcare-medicare-advantage-20260121.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/jefferson-lehigh-valley-health-unitedhealthcare-medicare-advantage-20260121.html\">decision by <\/a><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/jefferson-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jefferson Health<\/a>\u2019s Lehigh Valley Health Network to go out of network with United \u2014 has people on edge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Main Line Health said that United had been engaging more meaningfully in negotiations in recent weeks. \u201cWe are hopeful that momentum continues. We remain committed to reaching a resolution before June 30,\u201d its statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">For Main Line, which is far <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/lankenau-bryn-mawr-paoli-riddle-hospital-financial-results-20260602.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/lankenau-bryn-mawr-paoli-riddle-hospital-financial-results-20260602.html\">less profitable<\/a> than it was before the pandemic, the dispute is not just about rate increases. The nonprofit health system also wants to reduce claim denials, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/20\/health\/health-insurance-prior-authorization.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/20\/health\/health-insurance-prior-authorization.html\">prior authorization delays<\/a>, and excessive audits. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">UnitedHealthcare focused on prices in a statement, and the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/en-us\/insights\/us-health-news\/employers-prepare-for-the-highest-health-benefit-cost-increase-in-15-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/en-us\/insights\/us-health-news\/employers-prepare-for-the-highest-health-benefit-cost-increase-in-15-years\/\">impact high costs have on employers<\/a> who pay for health benefits. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cMain Line Health is seeking price hikes that would significantly increase costs for families and employers,\u201d UnitedHealthcare said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">United added that self-insured companies would absorb the biggest hit \u201dimpacting the money they have to grow their business and compensate their employees.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Worries about maternity care<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Jessica Geida, a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/newtown-square\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newtown Square<\/a> resident and an ob\/gyn who is not currently practicing, is particularly worried about access to maternity care in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/delaware-county\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delaware County<\/a>, given that Axia is already out of network with United.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Main Line operates the only practice that delivers babies at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/riddle-hospital\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Riddle Hospital<\/a> for people with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) , said Gaida, who has worked at Axia and Main Line. \u201cIf they drop UHC, there would be no access to care in the Delaware County,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Maternity care has been under pressure in Delaware County since <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/business\/health\/crozer-health-closing-maternity-unit-delaware-county-memorial-hospital-20220104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/business\/health\/crozer-health-closing-maternity-unit-delaware-county-memorial-hospital-20220104.html\">the maternity unit<\/a> closed at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in early 2022, followed by the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/crozer-taylor-closures-emergency-room-visits-20250609.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/crozer-taylor-closures-emergency-room-visits-20250609.html\">shutdown of Crozer-Chester Medical Center<\/a> a year ago as part of the Prospect Medical Holdings bankruptcy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby closed its labor and delivery unit more than 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">If Main Line and United fail to reach a deal, UnitedHealthcare patients might have to go to Penn Medicine\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/chester-county\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chester County<\/a> Hospital in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/west-chester\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Chester<\/a>, which is already busy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Patients who get into Penn\u2019s ob\/gyn practice at Penn Medicine Radnor deliver babies at the Hospital of the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/university-of-pennsylvania\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">University of hover:shadow-lightmode\">Main Line Health had a narrow operating profit in the nine months ended March 31<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A disappointing call<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feaster said a call from UnitedHealthcare Friday left her feeling very uncertain about her care. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feaster grew up in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/wayne\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wayne<\/a> and kept seeing Main Line doctors when she moved to Trooper, which is north of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/king-of-prussia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">King of Prussia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feaster would have to specially request a continuation of care to keep seeing each of her Main Line doctors at in-network prices, the UnitedHealthcare representative told her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The temporary stopgap is designed to help people who have significant needs \u2014 including cancer patients in the middle of treatment \u2014 avoid gaps in care while they switch to doctors who accept their insurance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Feaster would have to fill out part of the form, and her doctors would have to complete another part.
