A look at the astronauts on NASA&#8217;s shortlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-e5536a40-7078-4638-8329-defa8de26165\">NASA is about to reveal the astronauts who will launch to space on the Artemis 3 mission.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation about who will be in that four-person crew has been high since the return of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2<\/a> mission, which flew four astronauts around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> in April. At the time, NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya said the announcement of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> crew would come &#8220;soon,&#8221; but he didn&#8217;t specify a target date.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e5536a40-7078-4638-8329-defa8de26165-2\">We have one now: The announcement is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-will-reveal-the-artemis-3-astronauts-on-june-9\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-will-reveal-the-artemis-3-astronauts-on-june-9\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-will-reveal-the-artemis-3-astronauts-on-june-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scheduled for June 9<\/a>. Until then, we can make some educated guesses that point to some likely, and also some unlikely, candidates for this very high-profile mission. And the picks might not necessarily all come from the group of 18 astronauts that make up the original Artemis cadre <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-astronauts-for-moon-landing-unveiled\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-astronauts-for-moon-landing-unveiled\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-astronauts-for-moon-landing-unveiled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced in 2020<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a look at which astronauts are eligible, and which are probably not up for consideration.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-bcdf075b-051f-46bb-bf70-50ba0014676b\">Before we dive into the full list, however, we can whittle it down some by ruling out those least likely to be up for a spot on Artemis 3. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> is targeting mid- to late 2027 for Artemis 3, so timing and crew schedules aboard the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS) play a big part in who will be available for the training leading up to the mission. Technical specialties and backgrounds may also have a hand in deciding who is chosen for Artemis 3, which differs significantly in its objectives compared to Artemis 2.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 2 launched NASA astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reid Wiseman<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Glover<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Koch<\/a>, as well as the Canadian Space Agency&#8217;s (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CSA<\/a>) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Hansen<\/a>, on a 10-day mission aboard an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion capsule<\/a>, which flew a single figure-eight loop around the far side of the moon and back to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>. The mission was Orion&#8217;s first test flight with astronauts aboard. Now that it&#8217;s proven that capability, the crew of Artemis 3 will be tasked with a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-reveals-new-details-about-artemis-3-astronaut-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">very different mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 3 won&#8217;t fly to the moon. Instead, it will launch Orion into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO), where the crewmates will practice rendezvous and docking maneuvers with one or two <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-wants-to-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028-will-spacexs-starship-or-blue-origins-blue-moon-lander-be-ready-in-time\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-wants-to-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028-will-spacexs-starship-or-blue-origins-blue-moon-lander-be-ready-in-time\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-wants-to-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028-will-spacexs-starship-or-blue-origins-blue-moon-lander-be-ready-in-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">privately developed lunar lander vehicles<\/a>. Artemis 3 astronauts will also have the opportunity, to some extent, to test new <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extravehicular activity<\/a> (EVA) spacesuits designed for missions to the lunar surface. So NASA will most likely be looking for astronauts with experience piloting new or unproven vehicles, and at least one or two candidates who&#8217;ve completed a spacewalk.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has contracted SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> and Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/blue-origin-lunar-lander\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon spacecraft<\/a> as Human Landing System (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-human-moon-lander-contracts-september-2021\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-human-moon-lander-contracts-september-2021\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-human-moon-lander-contracts-september-2021\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HLS<\/a>) landers to deliver astronauts to the surface of the moon on the first several Artemis missions to the lunar surface. But the agency hasn&#8217;t yet decided which of them will be awarded the program&#8217;s first crewed landing, which is scheduled to take place in late 2028 on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-38184108-4612-4e51-b9d3-51af3cd1e58f\">That decision will largely depend on the outcome of Artemis 3. Both landers have <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-still-confident-that-artemis-astronauts-will-land-on-the-moon-in-2028-despite-spacesuit-delays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faced development delays<\/a>, and NASA has indicated a willingness to fly Artemis 3 with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-more-artemis-moon-landers-for-astronauts\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-more-artemis-moon-landers-for-astronauts\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-more-artemis-moon-landers-for-astronauts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">either or both vehicles<\/a>, should one of them not be ready to launch in time. And there&#8217;s already a big risk of that \u2014 one of Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn<\/a> rockets, the launch vehicle for Blue Moon, recently <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exploded on the pad<\/a> during an engine test.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the goals of Artemis 3 are much more focused on things like spacecraft piloting and operations than they are on lunar exploration, which is definitely something NASA will have kept in mind when deciding its crew.<\/p>\n<p>Because they just flew on Artemis 2, it&#8217;s unlikely Wiseman, Glover, Koch or Hansen will be up for consideration for the upcoming mission. Historically, NASA does not schedule astronauts for back-to-back flights. With that in mind, some of the Artemis cadre currently aboard the ISS and those scheduled to launch to the station in the coming months can probably be ruled out as well. That includes original NASA Artemis cadre astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-meir-hanukkah.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-meir-hanukkah.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-meir-hanukkah.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Meir<\/a>, currently in space, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-watkins-biography-reference\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-watkins-biography-reference\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jessica-watkins-biography-reference\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Watkins<\/a>, who is scheduled to launch to the station as commander of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Crew-13 sometime in late summer or early fall. NASA astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-candidate-class-the-flies\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-candidate-class-the-flies\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-candidate-class-the-flies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Hathaway<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/rookie-nasa-astronaut-chris-williams-will-launch-to-the-iss-on-a-russian-rocket-later-this-year\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/rookie-nasa-astronaut-chris-williams-will-launch-to-the-iss-on-a-russian-rocket-later-this-year\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/rookie-nasa-astronaut-chris-williams-will-launch-to-the-iss-on-a-russian-rocket-later-this-year\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Williams<\/a> are also currently aboard the ISS, and spaceflight rookie <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/amp\/nasa-astronaut-candidates-training-2022\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/amp\/nasa-astronaut-candidates-training-2022\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/amp\/nasa-astronaut-candidates-training-2022\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Delaney<\/a> is launching on Crew-13 as well, and can all likely be ruled out.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>NASA astronauts <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronaut-anne-mcclain-loves-celestial-buddy-earth.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronaut-anne-mcclain-loves-celestial-buddy-earth.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronaut-anne-mcclain-loves-celestial-buddy-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anne McClain<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jonny-kim-iss-korean-american\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jonny-kim-iss-korean-american\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-jonny-kim-iss-korean-american\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonny Kim<\/a> both returned from the ISS in 2025, which is relatively recent, but their backgrounds and experience make both of them possible contenders for Artemis 3.<\/p>\n<p>Kim joined NASA as a part of the agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/37130-new-nasa-astronauts-2017-class-slideshow.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/37130-new-nasa-astronauts-2017-class-slideshow.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/37130-new-nasa-astronauts-2017-class-slideshow.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2017 astronaut class<\/a>. They are each listed as NASA &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/management-astronauts\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/management-astronauts\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">management astronauts<\/a>,&#8221; who the agency says are no longer eligible for flight assignments in their current role. She also has aerospace engineering and test piloting experience, served in the Marine Corps and has played a role in HLS development since her return after commanding the SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-7-iss-undocking-webcast\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-7-iss-undocking-webcast\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-7-iss-undocking-webcast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crew-7<\/a> mission to the ISS. She spent about 5.5 months aboard the ISS as commander of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-5-depart-international-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-5-depart-international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-crew-5-depart-international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX Crew-5<\/a> in 2022, during which she <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-astronauts-install-irosa-mount\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-astronauts-install-irosa-mount\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacewalk-astronauts-install-irosa-mount\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">completed two EVAs<\/a>. Mann was part of NASA&#8217;s 2013 astronaut class and joined the agency with a test pilot and mechanical engineering background. She also flew F\/A-18 fighter jets as a Marine Corps colonel. This means he trained alongside the Artemis 2 astronauts right up until the day of their launch. He&#8217;s a spaceflight rookie from NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-class-2021-announcement-webcast\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-class-2021-announcement-webcast\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-class-2021-announcement-webcast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021 astronaut class<\/a>, but his extensive familiarity with Orion and mission procedures make him a very likely contender for Artemis 3. It was common for members of backup crews for NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo program<\/a> to be assigned as the main crew for later missions. Nearly 2.5 years before the Artemis 2 crew announcement (which occurred in April 2023), NASA <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canadian-astronauts-artemis-moon-missions\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canadian-astronauts-artemis-moon-missions\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canadian-astronauts-artemis-moon-missions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">committed to flying a CSA astronaut on Artemis 2<\/a> as part of its agreement for Canada to supply critical components for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43018-lunar-orbital-platform-gateway.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lunar Gateway space station<\/a>. NASA reached a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japan-astronaut-visit-nasa-moon-gateway\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japan-astronaut-visit-nasa-moon-gateway\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japan-astronaut-visit-nasa-moon-gateway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar deal<\/a> with Japan&#8217;s space agency, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JAXA<\/a>, which committed to contribute critical components for Gateway&#8217;s life support systems in exchange for seats on future missions to the cislunar outpost.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for a space station orbiting the moon, though, have <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-lunar-gateway-space-station-is-out-moon-bases-are-in\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-lunar-gateway-space-station-is-out-moon-bases-are-in\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-lunar-gateway-space-station-is-out-moon-bases-are-in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since been scrapped<\/a>, and NASA has not indicated how that cancellation may affect its arrangements to include crews from outside agencies. Without Gateway, Japan\u2019s clearest crew path is probably tied to contributions to lunar surface infrastructure, and a Japanese astronaut will therefore not likely be included on the first four Artemis flights.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b14f7ca5-3944-4baf-91eb-f9cd5cf96fb8\">If NASA does opt to give an Artemis 3 seat to an international partner, an astronaut from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency <\/a>(ESA) likely has the best chance of getting chosen. ESA builds Orion&#8217;s service module, which is responsible for supplying the space capsule with power, propulsion, water, oxygen and thermal control. With a spot on Artemis 2 already given to CSA, ESA may be next in line.<\/p>\n<p>Some strong ESA astronaut possibilities include Italy&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29161-astronaut-star-trek-uniform-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29161-astronaut-star-trek-uniform-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29161-astronaut-star-trek-uniform-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samantha Cristoforetti<\/a>, as well as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronauts-spacewalk-space-station-repairs-wardrobe-malfunction\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronauts-spacewalk-space-station-repairs-wardrobe-malfunction\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronauts-spacewalk-space-station-repairs-wardrobe-malfunction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthias Maurer<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40803-international-space-station-crew-launch-expedition-56.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40803-international-space-station-crew-launch-expedition-56.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40803-international-space-station-crew-launch-expedition-56.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Gerst<\/a>, both from Germany. If ESA still wants to reserve a moon mission for a German astronaut, Gerst and Maurer would likely be at the front of the line.
