{"id":691734,"date":"2026-06-08T14:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T14:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/691734\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T14:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T14:55:09","slug":"terrible-alex-bregman-takes-blame-for-cubs-downfall-after-signing-175-million-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/691734\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Terrible\u2019 Alex Bregman takes blame for Cubs downfall after signing $175 million deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cubs won the Alex Bregman sweepstakes \u2014\u00a0but so far it\u2019s been nothing but a $175 million bust.<\/p>\n<p>Bregman departed the Red Sox for Chicago after one solid season, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/13\/sports\/how-red-sox-botched-alex-bregman-negotiations-a-little-bit-mad\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">despite pleas from the fan base<\/a>, but he\u2019s having the worst season of his career with the bat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been terrible,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48997165\/alex-bregman-takes-blame-cubs-offensive-woes-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bregman said<\/a> after going 0-for-5 in a 2-1 extra innings loss to the hapless Giants. \u201cI need to play better. Offensively, it\u2019s been awful. I\u2019ve failed many times in this game. I\u2019ve struggled. I\u2019ve started slow before. I\u2019ve started fast before. When you\u2019re struggling, there is only one way forward, and that\u2019s straight, head-on through it. It comes down to executing in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Bregman\u2019s issues, the Cubs were off to a 29-16 now start \u2014\u00a0but now are 5-16 in their last 21 games and have dropped to fourth in the NL Central.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39609830\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/alex-bregman.jpg\" alt=\"Alex Bregman in a Chicago Cubs uniform, holding a baseball bat.\" class=\"wp-image-39609830\"\/>Alex Bregman\u2019s nightmare season continues in Chicago with an 0-for-5 game on Sunday. Huh<\/p>\n<p>Bregman has a .669 OPS, by far a career worst, and his five home runs and 19 RBIs in 65 games are worse than many of the even most light-hitting starters, including beleagured Mets second baseman Marcus Semien (eight HR, 25 RBI) and Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon (six HR, 20 RBI).<\/p>\n<p>Bregman has been solid with the glove, still coming in at seventh in defensive runs saved among all third basemen. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t executed all year,\u201d Bregman said. \u201cRunners in scoring position, I\u2019ve been god-awful. I need to be better. If I\u2019m better over the last how many games, we probably win the majority of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the toughest moments of his season occurred on Sunday night.
