The fear of missing out, also known as FOMO, is becoming a financial problem for millions of Americans.<\/p>\n
A new CouponCabin survey found 63% of participants admit to spending money they didn\u2019t have just to attend social events. 15% say they\u2019ve racked up more than $2,000 in debt trying to keep up with friends, parties and experiences.<\/p>\n
St. Paul financial planner Bjorn Amundson with Quarry Hill Advisors tells us there are ways to save going out.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing out to restaurants and trying to keep up with all of the things [your] friends are ordering can really be a significant expense,\u201d Amundson said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to go to every single event, and you can always find ways to cut back even if you do go out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amundson recommends that, instead of splitting the bill, you only pay for what you bought and load up on gift cards.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there\u2019s one or two restaurants you frequent throughout the year, a lot of time around Christmas, they\u2019ll have gift cards and a lot of time you can get 25% off,\u201d\u00a0Amundson said.<\/p>\n
Amundson also recommends skipping the appetizer or first drink when you go out.<\/p>\n
