There was no resolution, of course. But Trump has nonetheless spent the two months since then continuing to suggest a deal was right around the corner. A lot.<\/p>\n
Including the period before the ceasefire, he\u2019s done it at least 37 times. That\u2019s the number of times he\u2019s said directly \u2014 in social media posts, public appearances and phone calls with the media \u2014 that a deal was nigh or claimed Iran was desperate to cut one.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no indication that\u2019s any more true today than it was back on April 7. But Trump keeps saying it, either because he\u2019s delusional, trying to calm the financial markets or thinking he can will it into existence.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s clearly not a claim people should take seriously anymore.<\/p>\n
It began March 23, less than a month into the war. Trump was telling reporters outside Air Force One about supposed peace talks and cited \u201cmajor points of agreement, I would \u200bsay \u2014 almost all points of agreement<\/a>.\u201d (In fact, Iran denied negotiations<\/a>.)<\/p>\n By the next day, he started trotting out what has become a common refrain: that Iran was desperate to cut a deal.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we\u2019re going to end it,\u201d Trump added. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n By March 25, it became that Iran wanted to \u201cmake a deal so badly.\u201d On March 26, at a Cabinet meeting, Iran was \u201cbegging to make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n (Despite being so anxious to cut that deal, Iran has somehow resisted for two and a half more months.)<\/p>\n By March 29, during a gaggle with reporters on Air Force One, Trump was asked if he foresaw clinching a deal in the next week, and he responded: \u201cI do see a deal in Iran, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n President Donald Trump talks to members of the media aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on March 29. – Elizabeth Frantz\/Reuters<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s predictions started to grow more insistent at this point. On April 6, he said they had been \u201cvery close to a deal\u201d before a setback.<\/p>\n The next day, he announced the ceasefire, which was originally supposed to last two weeks while the two sides hammered out an agreement.<\/p>\n A week later, on April 15, he told Fox Business, \u201cI think it\u2019s close to over, I view it as very close to over<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d he added. \u201cI think they want to make a deal very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n The next few days, Trump practically assured it was over:<\/p>\n Despite that not panning out, Iran was still \u201cdying to make a deal\u201d on April 30.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the war ends, which shouldn\u2019t be too long \u2026\u201d he wagered to reporters on May 1.<\/p>\n Trump held back on his predictions for a spell, before announcing on May 18 that he was delaying military strikes for \u201ctwo or three days\u201d at the request of Middle Eastern countries, \u201cbecause they think that they are getting very close to making a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n At this point, even Trump seemed to acknowledge how often such predictions had gone awry.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve had periods of time where we had \u2014 we thought pretty much getting close to making a deal and it didn\u2019t work out,\u201d Trump said, before adding: \u201cBut this is a little bit different.\u201d<\/p>\n It was not different. But he remained undeterred.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re gonna end that war very quickly,\u201d Trump said May 19 at a congressional picnic.<\/p>\n By May 23, he made the rounds much like he had on April 17. He said the administration was \u201cgetting a lot closer<\/a>\u201d to a deal. He said the deal was \u201clargely negotiated, subject to finalization<\/a>.\u201d And he said the deal would be announced \u201cshortly\u201d<\/a> and that the \u201cfinal aspects\u201d were being discussed.<\/p>\n On May 28, in an interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, things were \u201cclose to a very good deal.\u201d<\/p>\n And on Sunday, he assured that they were \u201cvery close to having a deal,\u201d but that Iran and Israel were jeopardizing it by engaging in a side scuffle.<\/p>\n![\"President](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/e2a33fc04b7ad53cabeadd977521794e.jpeg\"\/)
