Longtime power forward Milan Lucic announced his retirement from the NHL on Sunday following a 17-season career with the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames. Lucic scored 233 goals and 586 points in 1,177 career regular-season games, adding 29 goals and 77 points in 136 playoff games.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old was known as one of the NHL\u2019s best power forwards throughout parts of his career, often antagonizing opposing teams and even fan bases<\/a>, primarily during his time in Boston. The Vancouver native won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011, defeating his hometown Canucks in seven games.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to especially thank the Bruins for giving me my start in professional hockey and for instilling the confidence to reach new heights as a player,\u201d Lucic said in a statement. \u201cLater in my career, I had the privilege of playing with some exceptional organizations in Los Angeles, Edmonton and Calgary. I look back with fondness at the time I spent with each organization and for the remarkable teammates I had the pleasure of playing alongside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucic also represented Canada on the international stage, winning a gold medal at the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Finland and Latvia.<\/p>\n

The forward\u2019s last attempt to remain in the NHL came in October when he signed a tryout agreement<\/a> with the St. Louis Blues. Lucic required reinstatement to re-enter the league after he was arrested and charged with assault and battery after an alleged domestic dispute in November 2023 and spent time in the NHL\/NHLPA Player Assistance program. Prosecutors eventually dropped the charges after Lucic\u2019s wife, Brittany, invoked marital privilege and opted out of testifying against her husband.<\/p>\n

After failing to make the Blues out of training camp, Lucic played five games for the American Hockey League\u2019s Springfield Thunderbirds before joining the Fife Flyers of the Elite Ice Hockey League in England, with whom he scored five goals and 12 points in 26 games.<\/p>\n
