\n\tSteven Spielberg<\/a> helped create the summer blockbuster with \u201cJaws,\u201d a smash hit that opened in June 1975 and showed Hollywood how much money could be made when school\u2019s out. It\u2019s been more than 50 years since \u201cJaws\u201d made audiences scared to go in the water, and Spielberg, who was 28 when the film premiered, is 79 and out to prove with \u201cDisclosure Day<\/a>\u201d that he still knows how to draw crowds.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe alien invasion adventure opens on June 12 and, with its $115 million budget, represents one of summer\u2019s biggest gambles \u2014 a twisty conspiracy thriller that doesn\u2019t come wrapped in familiar IP. Because it\u2019s an original story, Universal\u2019s marketing has leaned heavily on Spielberg\u2019s name to distinguish \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d from the franchise films and low-budget horror flicks that are dominating multiplexes. But the tracking is shaky, with the movie expected to open to $35 million \u2014 below the $50 million that some studios argue a film of that size should debut to in order to justify its cost. Because theaters keep roughly half of ticket sales and \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d\u2019s marketing costs are about $80 million, rival executives believe the movie will need to earn $300 million globally to be profitable.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSpielberg\u2019s name carries weight, but it\u2019s not the same [as it was],\u201d says one studio executive. \u201cMoviegoers who grew up with Spielberg are older, and those are the ones who are more challenged to go to cinemas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpielberg was once synonymous with escapist entertainment, directing spectacles like \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\u201d and \u201cJurassic Park\u201d and creating the \u201cIndiana Jones\u201d franchise. Those films revolutionized the way that Hollywood does business \u2014 demonstrating that movies could sell T-shirts and toys as well as tickets. But Spielberg\u2019s artistic ambitions shifted in the 1990s as he focused more on historical epics like \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d and \u201cSaving Private Ryan.\u201d That move to prestige dramas accelerated in the past decade, which saw Spielberg directing awards bait like \u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d and the \u201cWest Side Story\u201d remake to great acclaim. More commercial efforts like \u201cThe BFG\u201d and \u201cReady Player One\u201d were a mixed bag and largely failed to introduce Spielberg to a younger generation of moviegoers, the demographic that \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d needs to attract.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd that\u2019s a problem because Spielberg doesn\u2019t come cheap. His salary is usually $10 million for directing (he gets a producer fee too), and the actors in his movies often get their full freight. \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d stars Emily Blunt<\/a>, whose asking price is $15 million, and Josh O\u2019Connor, who has sought $6 million for previous pictures.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpielberg isn\u2019t always eager to be the public face of his work, but he has worked aggressively to sell \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d dropping by CinemaCon and SXSW, appearing on podcasts like Michelle Obama\u2019s \u201cIMO\u201d and \u201cThe Rewatchables,\u201d and doing an event at TikTok headquarters with creator Reece Feldman to drum up interest with Gen Z moviegoers.<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite his efforts, there\u2019s a lack of awareness around the movie, with tracking lagging behind DC\u2019s \u201cSupergirl\u201d and \u201cJackass: Best and Last,\u201d both of which open weeks later. But sources close to Universal say that much of the marketing campaign for \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d is backloaded and hitting the week of release. The promotional campaign was always intended to break late, they say, to keep the story\u2019s mysteries under wraps. Universal is betting \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d will enjoy strong reviews, which will drive business. Because Spielberg\u2019s audience tends to be older and doesn\u2019t feel the urgency to see a movie on opening weekend, \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d could continue to sell tickets through June and July.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat will the legs look like? What will word of mouth look like?\u201d asks Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango. \u201cThis seems like one that could really get people talking in a good way.\u201d
At CinemaCon, Spielberg warned that Hollywood will \u201crun out of gas\u201d if it only makes reboots and sequels. \u201cWe need to tell more original stories,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast month, a 26-year-old YouTube-trained filmmaker named Curry Barker enjoyed unprecedented box office<\/a> returns with one of those original stories. \u201cObsession,\u201d Barker\u2019s low-budget thriller, attracted a rising generation of moviegoers by offering something they hadn\u2019t seen on the big screen. Like Spielberg did with \u201cJaws\u201d in 1975, Barker seemed to be charting a new direction for the movie business.
