It\u2019s official: Republican Sen. Susan Collins will face Democrat Graham Platner this fall, NBC News projects, in what will be a marquee election in the fight for control of the Senate.<\/p>\n

Collins and Platner both won their primaries Tuesday in a predictable result. Collins, first elected to the Senate in 1996, ran unopposed for renomination as she seeks a sixth six-year term.<\/p>\n
And Platner, a veteran and oyster farmer running in his first political race, faced little Democratic competition as two-term Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign<\/a> after she failed to gain traction. She still appeared on the primary ballot.<\/p>\n While the primary results were foreseeable, what happens next is anything but. The Senate election has already become a battleground over the future of the Democratic Party and what voters think is most important, as Platner faces numerous controversies about his past conduct<\/a>.<\/p>\n And that\u2019s before the real campaigning between the resilient incumbent and the brash outsider has even kicked off, though Platner started the general election with a series of stinging attacks on Collins at a victory speech in Blue Hill, Maine. The Democrat cast her as the \u201cdeciding vote\u201d on Republican priorities including Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2019s confirmation<\/p>\n \u201cSusan Collins may have started her career decades ago in Washington with good intentions, but she has become just as spineless and corrupt as the establishment she now serves,\u201d Platner said. \u201cShe got elected promising to protect Roe versus Wade, only to turn around and put on a justice, but a justice of Supreme Court who overturned it. She lied to us.\u201d<\/p>\n Maine looms large in the battle for the Senate majority. Democrats hold 47 seats and need a net gain of four to capture the majority. Collins, as the only Republican senator from a state President Donald Trump lost in 2024, is an inviting target for defeat.<\/p>\n But Collins has proved to be a political survivor, repeatedly defying attempts to oust her \u2014 and hoping to do so yet again in a difficult environment.<\/p>\n In 2020, when Democrats were brimming with optimism about winning the seat, Collins overperformed the polls and won re-election by more than 8 points, even as Trump lost the state by about 9 points.<\/p>\n Collins is backed by Trump, who said in March<\/a> on Fox News: \u201cI hope she wins. Because we have to. She\u2019s a good person, actually. But we have to win. We have to keep the majority. Otherwise all of the things that we\u2019ve done are going to go down the tubes.\u201d<\/p>\n In previous election cycles, Democrats have nominated center-left figures who were backed by the party establishment and fell short against Collins. This year, Platner is unlike any other opponent Collins has faced: a populist outsider who has built a connection to supporters with calls to upend the status quo, tax the rich, expand the social safety net and get money out of politics.<\/p>\n But he also brings significant baggage and controversy.<\/p>\n There\u2019s the chest tattoo he recently had covered<\/a> after he said he didn\u2019t know it had a Nazi association. There are his years-old Reddit posts<\/a> criticizing police, suggesting some victims of sexual assault bore some responsibility and labeling himself a \u201ccommunist.\u201d He has chalked it up to \u201cInternet s—posting\u201d from an earlier era that doesn\u2019t reflect his views today.<\/p>\n![\"Susan](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260604-Susan-Collins-ac-1223-defd4b.jpg\")
