{"id":694777,"date":"2026-06-10T02:56:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T02:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/694777\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T02:56:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T02:56:18","slug":"blacksky-to-accelerate-broad-area-collection-work-under-nro-contract-modification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/694777\/","title":{"rendered":"BlackSky to accelerate broad-area collection work under NRO contract modification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 The National Reconnaissance Office awarded a contract modification to BlackSky Technology to accelerate development of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/blacksky-unveils-wide-area-imaging-satellite\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AROS broad-area-collection<\/a> satellites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe effort funds a direct path toward a flight ready multi-spectral, large-area mapping spacecraft and foundation data collection system in 2028,\u201d according to the June 9 news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BlackSky, a provider of satellite imagery and analytics based in Herndon, Virginia,\u00a0announced plans in 2025 to develop AROS satellites for applications that require broad geographical coverage including country-scale mapping, maritime monitoring and 3D digital twin applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDeveloping BlackSky\u2019s AROS constellation in partnership with the U.S. government cements a major step in securing U.S. global space competitiveness, resilience and maintaining critical operational continuity as commercially available foundation data becomes capacity-constrained in the coming years,\u201d Blacksky CEO Brian O\u2019Toole said in a statement. \u201cBlackSky will design, develop and field the next generation of high-performance, AI-ready geospatial foundation data satellites, leveraging the proven heritage and reliability of our advanced Gen-3 architecture and vertically integrated agile manufacturing infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BlackSky\u2019s AROS satellites will operate as an extension of the company\u2019s existing Earth-observation fleet, incorporating the company\u2019s space, software and platform stack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In orbit, AROS large-area surveillance satellites will be able to tip and cue BlackSky\u2019s high-resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/blacksky-announces-latest-gen-3-satellite-in-orbit-after-confidential-electron-launch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gen-3 satellites<\/a>.
