Straight-up comedies have struggled to find a foothold in theaters since the pandemic, but after last weekend\u2019s encouraging \u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d<\/a> launch and this weekend\u2019s promising \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d<\/a> prospect, it looks like studios are ready to invest in comedy all over again. <\/p>\n

Variety<\/a> has shared that Kristen Wiig<\/a> \u2014\u00a0the \u201cSNL\u201d alum who powered one of the \u201910s most successful laughers, \u201cBridesmaids\u201d \u2014\u00a0will co-star with Jonah Hill<\/a> as siblings in the upcoming Warner Bros<\/a>. release \u201cCut Off<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair will play adult siblings forced to adjust to real life after their parents stop paying for them. Ezra Woods co-wrote with Hill, who will also direct. \u201cCut Off\u201d will hit theaters on July 17, 2026, placing it as counter programming to \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d which \u2014\u00a0of course \u2014\u00a0already has sold out<\/a> advance IMAX screenings for that date, 11.5 months ahead of its actual release.<\/p>\n

Wiig will return to live action features for the first time since 2021\u2019s \u201cA Boy Called Christmas\u201d with \u201cGabby\u2019s Dollhouse: The Movie,\u201d an adaptation of the Netflix children\u2019s series set for release on September 26 from Universal. Wiig hasn\u2019t had a big movie comedy since the acclaimed \u201cBarb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,\u201d which was set for a 2020 release before the pandemic scuttled those plans.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Wiig has been busy on television, starring in the Apple TV+ series \u201cPalm Royale,\u201d<\/a> which earned her a Best Actress Emmy nomination in 2024. That show \u2014\u00a0which co-stars Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas, Amber Chardae Robinson, and the legendary Carol Burnett \u2014\u00a0has been renewed for a second season. When that one comes back, it might pair together even more funny people, as Burnett has signaled she wants her longtime comedic partner Vicki Lawrence added to the cast.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish they could find something for [Vicki] on the show,\u201d Burnett told IndieWire<\/a> last year. \u201cI\u2019m going to ask Abe if there\u2019s a part that might come up because that would be fun to have Vicki on. That would really be something. And not just a mercy booking. That\u2019s not what I mean. But if there\u2019s a role that she could sink her teeth into, because she is a very good actress.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Hill, he\u2019s been characteristically busy, as well, but largely behind the scenes. As a producer, he\u2019s had \u201cY2K,\u201d as well as the series \u201cSausage Party: Foodtopia,\u201d \u201cThe Mortician,\u201d and \u201cOvercompensating.\u201d He\u2019s got another movie \u2014 as actor, writer (with Woods), and director \u2014 in the works, \u201cOutcome,\u201d<\/a> set for release by Apple TV+ at a yet to be determined date.
