{"id":696857,"date":"2026-06-11T02:28:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T02:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/696857\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T02:28:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T02:28:18","slug":"physicist-eva-andrei-becomes-first-rutgers-professor-to-earn-kavli-prize-one-of-the-highest-honors-in-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/696857\/","title":{"rendered":"Physicist Eva Andrei Becomes First Rutgers Professor to Earn Kavli Prize, One of the Highest Honors in Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  The recognition for her foundational work in nanoscience includes a $1 million shared prize<\/p>\n<p>Physicist Eva Andrei, whose groundbreaking research could lead to ultrafast computer chips, highly accurate medical imaging sensors, and more energy-efficient power grids, received the <a href=\"https:\/\/kavli-prize.vercel.app\/2026-kavli-prize-laureates-announced\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience<\/a>\u2014becoming the first Rutgers faculty member to earn one of the world\u2019s most prestigious science awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrei, a Board of Governors Professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.rutgers.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, is one of only 10 scientists worldwide and the only one in New Jersey named a 2026 Kavli Laureate.<\/p>\n<p>Awarded every two years, the Kavli Prize recognizes researchers whose discoveries in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience have transformed their fields and \u201cbroadened our understanding of the big, the small and the complex.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The laureates in each field share a $1 million prize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kavli award is an exceptional recognition of Eva Andrei&#8217;s accomplishments that have established a new research field in nanoscale quantum physics and are inspiring scientists across other fields,\u2019\u2019 said John P. Hughes, chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. \u201cIt is a testament to her creativity, excellent scientific judgement, and experimental skills.\u2019 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They will be recognized during a ceremony in September in Oslo, Norway, presided over by the Royal Family. The Kavli Prize is a partnership among the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research and the Kavli Foundation. Since the inception of the award, 10 Kavli laureates have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonoring these excellent scientists is not only a recognition of achievements, it is an investment in our shared future, affirming the curiosity, rigor, and courage that drives human progress,\u201d said Annelin Eriksen, president of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Andrei will share the Kavli Prize in nanoscience with Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Allan H. MacDonald from the University of Texas at Austin, for foundational work that established the field of twistronics, a combination of the words \u201ctwist\u201d and \u201celectronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\"   width=\"419\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lg_jm26evaandrei_kavliprize03.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Eva Andrei during a department celebration holding a bottle of champagne \" typeof=\"foaf:Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Eva Andrei during a celebration in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, alongside Chair John Hughes<\/p>\n<p>  John Munson\/Rutgers University<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This recognition reflects the work of every student and postdoc who has passed through our group, and especially that of my close collaborator Dr. Guohong Li, who has been an indispensable scientific partner since the earliest days of our moir\u00e9 discoveries,&#8221; said Andrei, who earned her doctoral degree in physics from Rutgers in 1982 and has been a faculty member in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sas.rutgers.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Arts and Sciences <\/a>ever since. &#8220;Rutgers has been both my scientific home and the place where this field took root \u2014 and that means everything to me.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also reflects a genuine moment of transformation in our field. Twistronics has brought together condensed matter physicists, materials scientists and quantum engineers in ways that feel genuinely new,\u2019\u2019 Andrei said. \u201cTo be recognized alongside Allan MacDonald and Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, whose contributions have been so complementary to mine, makes it especially meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrei&#8217;s early research laid the groundwork for twistronics before anyone knew the field would ever exist. Her lab at Rutgers was the first to show that stacking two sheets of graphene \u2014 pure carbon, each just one atom thick, arranged in a honeycomb \u2014 with a slight twist between them could completely transform their electronic properties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That twist, applied at a microscopic level, allows scientists to dial a single material from metal to insulator to superconductor simply by adjusting the voltage \u2014 a level of control that was previously unimaginable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe electronic properties were not just tweaked, they were transformed,\u201d Andrei said. \u201cWe discovered that the new pattern causes a dramatic reconstruction of how electrons behave, one that depends exquisitely on the angle of the twist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\"   width=\"419\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lg_nr26andreievalab7044n.jpg\" alt=\"Physicist Eva Andrei with some of the postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students who are members of her research group\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Physicist Eva Andrei with some of the postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students who are members of her research group.<\/p>\n<p>  Nick Romanenko\/Rutgers University<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea of twisting two atomically thin sheets of graphene was so fundamentally unheard of in 2009 that when Andrei submitted her findings, the editor of Science magazine refused to send the paper out for peer review. It was eventually published in Nature Physics.<\/p>\n<p>In a remarkable parallel, a separate paper on other graphene research met the same fate at Science and was also rejected without peer review.
