{"id":697019,"date":"2026-06-11T04:20:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T04:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/697019\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T04:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T04:20:12","slug":"a-strange-cold-blob-in-the-atlantic-signals-were-almost-at-a-tipping-point-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/697019\/","title":{"rendered":"A Strange &#8216;Cold Blob&#8217; in The Atlantic Signals We&#8217;re Almost at a Tipping Point : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a strange anomaly in the North Atlantic, just south of Greenland: A &#8216;cold blob&#8217; of ocean and air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-mysterious-blob-of-cold-water-defies-ocean-heat-now-we-know-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that&#8217;s cooling down<\/a> while the rest of the world warms up.<\/p>\n<p>Now a new analysis of this cold blob points to a serious and imminent climate problem.<\/p>\n<p>An international team of researchers used satellite data, reanalysis records, and ocean heat content data, including records extending back to 1955, to try to figure out the driving forces behind the blob.<\/p>\n<p>Up to this point, there have been two schools of thought: either ocean currents are bringing less heat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-re-finally-working-out-what-s-behind-this-weird-cooling-patch-of-water-in-the-atlantic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">into the region<\/a>, or the ocean in that area is losing more heat through the surface.<\/p>\n<p>Their results support the first explanation, and they conclude that we&#8217;re now very close to a dangerous tipping point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781151609_880_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The Atlantic&#8217;s cold blob is a sign of weakening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noc.ac.uk\/discover-the-ocean\/oceans-explained\/the-atlantic-meridional-overturning-circulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation<\/a> (AMOC), the researchers conclude.<\/p>\n<p>This is showing signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/its-confirmed-a-major-atlantic-ocean-current-is-verging-on-collapse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shutting down entirely<\/a> \u2013 an event predicted to have consequences for the planet far more severe than a cold patch in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the well-established existence of a tipping point of the AMOC, as well as recent studies finding a range of different &#8216;early warning signals&#8217; of the ocean circulation approaching such a tipping point, the strong evidence for a weakening AMOC is a serious concern for society and policy,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025GL118383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers determined that the cooling was a deep, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-simulations-reveal-how-earths-strongest-ocean-current-got-started\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underwater current<\/a> issue. Surface heat loss in the area has actually decreased, the study shows, so it&#8217;s not that more heat is escaping \u2013 it&#8217;s that less heat is coming in.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that the cold patch of ocean sits right at the top of the swirling &#8216;conveyor belt&#8217; of water that is the AMOC, it makes sense that temperatures here would drop as the AMOC weakens, and pushes less warm water from the tropics and equator farther north.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/OceanTemperature.jpg\" alt=\"North Atlantic Cold Blob\" width=\"642\" height=\"364\" class=\"wp-image-204356 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The &#8216;cold blob&#8217; in the Atlantic Ocean hasn&#8217;t followed the warming trend of the rest of the oceans. Lett., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>That the AMOC is slowing and weakening has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/apr\/15\/critical-atlantic-current-significantly-more-likely-to-collapse-than-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">established<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/there-s-clear-signs-a-major-atlantic-current-system-is-on-the-edge-of-collapse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous studies<\/a>. This new research gives us some of the best evidence yet that the cold blob and this vast ocean current are directly related.<\/p>\n<p>This conclusion aligns <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s43247-025-02403-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">with a 2025 study<\/a> that used climate models rather than historical, real-world data to link the AMOC to the region of cooler water, also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_blob\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Atlantic warming hole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The observed cooling trend cannot be explained by surface heat flux changes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025GL118383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the authors of this new study.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Multidecadal heat content variations are generally larger and more tightly correlated with ocean heat transport than with surface heat flux variability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-201722 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this underlying reason for the Atlantic&#8217;s cold blob now settled, what comes next? Unfortunately, based on the best models we have, it&#8217;s not looking good: Scientists broadly concur that the AMOC is <a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/amoc-climate-change\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inching closer to a tipping point<\/a> in its weakening influence, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-major-ocean-current-might-be-on-the-verge-of-a-climate-change-tipping-point\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will eventually disappear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of warming ocean waters and melting glaciers (which release freshwater into the oceans) is changing the balance that keeps the AMOC running.<\/p>\n<p>If it were to shut down entirely, Europe would be expected to experience much colder, harsher winters, with significant changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/40-c-summer-temperatures-could-be-common-in-uk-by-2100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global weather patterns<\/a>, ecosystems, and food security.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1781151612_474_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While large uncertainty remains over how close the Earth is to this tipping point, standard CMIP6 simulations of future global warming scenarios suggest it is crossed in a substantial subset of these model simulations around the middle of this century,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025GL118383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The AMOC has only been directly monitored since 2004, leaving scientists with too short a record to clearly determine the l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/atlantic-ocean-circulation-could-collapse-by-2050-scientists-warn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ong-term trajectory<\/a> of its recent weakening.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-cycle-deep-within-earths-crust-may-affect-climate-more-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Cycle Deep Within Earth&#8217;s Crust May Affect Climate More Than We Thought<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using climate models like those in CMIP6 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coupled_Model_Intercomparison_Project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6<\/a>), we can at least prepare for and predict what might happen if the AMOC stalls \u2013 as multiple studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/atlantic-ocean-circulation-could-collapse-by-2050-scientists-warn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are now suggesting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This risk requires urgent attention by policymakers,&#8221;
