We\u2019re gonna let Percy have the panic attacks. Charlie gets the heart attack. Obviously, [Charlie\u2019s] father died from a sudden heart attack, which is a big reason why Sam wanted to be a cardiologist and to help people, because of what happened to his father,\u201d Bradway told Deadline. \u201cAnd then it just so happens that Charlie also has heart problems, and unexpectedly, he\u2019s looking at the famous photo and he\u2019s reminiscing, and unfortunately it hurts too much, and he has a heart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTaking place in the year-plus time jump from the events that unfolded when Charlie invited Percy back to Barry\u2019s Bay for Sue\u2019s (Elisha Cuthbert) funeral, it\u2019s hinted that the older Florek brother is living a wealthy, but lonely lifestyle, especially when he comes into the office on a weekend day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI loved the idea [that] Charlie has buried himself in work. He has a broken heart. It\u2019s now physically breaking down, but he\u2019s also lost everything that matters to him,\u201d showrunner <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/amy-b-harris\/\" id=\"auto-tag_amy-b-harris\" data-tag=\"amy-b-harris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amy B. Harris<\/a> told Deadline. \u201cHe lost his brother, he lost that community in Barry\u2019s Bay. There\u2019s this sadness and a heartbrokenness to where he is, and it felt so perfect that Alice\u2019s photo would be the thing that reminded him of the world he loved and has lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe photo shows Charlie, his younger brother Sam (Matt Cornett) and Percy (Sadie Soverall) in the Floreks\u2019s father\u2019s yellow boat, nicknamed \u201cThe Banana Boat,\u201d and it is taken by one Alice Everly in Fortune\u2019s second book. Alice is the love of Charlie\u2019s live, and their romance unfolds in One Golden Summer when Alice returns to Barry\u2019s Bay to help her grandmother, Nan, heal from a hip surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt is their family boat, but I feel like it is Charlie\u2019s badge, he\u2019s the one that fixes it up, he\u2019s the one that drives it. Sam\u2019s not allowed to drive that boat,\u201d Bradway said. \u201cEspecially in the first season, Sam has Percy, and it\u2019s almost like \u2026 and Charlie gets the boat. Obviously I read One Golden Summer, and so I knew [the cliffhanger] was coming. It was actually in my Charlie playlist for a while, and so when I heard that that song was being played for that [moment], it was this crazy kismet,\u201d Bradway added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs for who will play Alice, that has not yet been determined, and Prime Video has not yet officially renewed Every Year After, but Harris did consider introducing the character in Season 1 in a more specific way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe talked a lot about ways to introduce Alice to our audience. \u2018Were we going to cast her and have her walk into a scene, or was somebody going to mention her?\u2019 We finally realized we had the most perfect way to bring her in without having to bring her in, which is that photograph,\u201d she told Deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThough Alice is now waiting in the wings, things aren\u2019t yet tied into a bow when it comes to Percy and Sam\u2019s relationship. While Sam sent an olive branch of sorts in the form of the keys to The Tavern \u2014 which his mother Sue left to Percy in her will \u2014 the friends to lovers have more to work through, especially after the reveal that Percy slept with Charlie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe knew from day one we were going to be ending [with] Sam and Percy not together. I very intentionally kept them standing apart, so we know, for the audience they\u2019re getting a version of a happy ending, but for us in our journey as storytellers, this is just the beginning for them. This big reveal will hang over the central couple of season one and resurface in a potential second season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIf we\u2019re lucky enough to have a season two, they\u2019re not settled, right? [Sam] still has feelings about what happened between them, and I think that is going to make their relationship complicated in the best way, and her guilt still should,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThey still have a lot of emotions and issues to work through, and I think that\u2019s what I don\u2019t see as much on TV that I am really interested in exploring. After you get your happy ending, it\u2019s really just the beginning of a relationship, and relationships are not static, they\u2019re constantly changing, and good things can happen to you, or bad things can happen to you, that are exterior from your relationship, and I really want to explore the challenges of being in a couple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThings are not over for Jordie (Josephe Chiu), Chantal (Aurora Perrineau) and Delilah (Abigail Cowen) either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe intentionally built out the ensemble because I think we can tell lots of stories with our six main characters. Obviously, Sam and Percy are our love story, the one we were following this season, but to me, the love triangle between Jordie, Chantal and Delilah has much more to explore,\u201d Harris added. \u201cI feel like there\u2019s a lot of story still to be told there. I think first loves die hard, as we know from Percy and Sam, so I\u2019m really interested in exploring that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhile Chantal and Jordie seem happy together at The Tavern after Jordie\u2019s asked her if they want to define the relationship \u2014 no more murky lake water \u2014 and date for real, Harris described this as \u201cearly days\u201d for their blooming romance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re trying to have a relationship and they\u2019re really committing to it, and I think that\u2019s beautiful, but there is a woman out there who is starting to realize that the person she was maybe supposed to be with was always right in front of her,\u201d Harris said. \u201cAnd for Jordie, that was his first love. As for Charlie, if readers and viewers have learned anything, he\u2019s going to be a wildcard. Fortune knew early on after she finished Every Summer After that there was more story to explore for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s still way more Sam and Percy to play with there while bringing in a new new storyline from One Golden Summer, I think that would be so exciting to me. I want to see Alice and Nan for sure, she told Deadline. \u201cI love Charlie. He\u2019s my favorite character to write, in that he\u2019s very easy for me to write. I don\u2019t know what it is about him, but I can put him in a room and he almost does his own thing, I can channel him really easily, and when I finished writing Every Summer After, I started writing from Charlie\u2019s voice, even before I had a book deal because he stayed with me, and there was so much more I wanted to say about him that isn\u2019t in Every Summer After.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAt the time the series order of Every Year After was given by Prime Video, Fortune hadn\u2019t yet published or even fully announced One Golden Summer, but the sequel book is also under option with Prime Video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI found [Charlie] to be a very complicated character, unlike Sam, there\u2019s so much that\u2019s underneath the surface with Charlie,\u201d Fortune said. \u201cYou think he\u2019s one thing, but he\u2019s not, and I had fans just demand that he have a love story.
