\n\tToy Story<\/a> 5, which premiered in Los Angeles<\/a> on Tuesday night, is almost guaranteed to be both a critical and commercial success<\/a>. However, there\u2019s one vocal fan who still needs winning over: Quentin Tarantino<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring several interviews over the last few years, the filmmaker has revealed himself to be a devoted lover of the Toy Story franchise, counting Toy Story 3<\/a> as one of his favorite movies <\/a>of all time. During a 2024 chat with Bill Maher, though, Tarantino said he had no interest in watching beyond the third movie, as \u201cYou literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s good. I\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSo what does the team behind Toy Story 5<\/a> have to say to Tarantino, and those like him, who may have dropped off along the way? <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI would say the simple pitch of Pixar<\/a> doesn\u2019t put out bad stuff,\u201d Tony Hale \u2014 who voices Forky, a character Taraninto hasn\u2019t yet met as he was introduced in Toy Story 4 \u2014 told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet. \u201cThe thing about Pixar is they wouldn\u2019t tell another story if there wasn\u2019t a story to tell. Look at this \u2014 that marriage of technology and toys, I want to hear that story. So I would have him lean into his trust of Pixar.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tPixar chief creative officer Pete Docter teased \u201cI\u2019ve always thought Quentin Tarantino has really good taste\u201d when it comes to his love of the franchise and admitted, \u201cI like that he sticks to his guns\u201d when he said he\u2019s done with No. 3. Pixar president Jim Morris chimed in, \u201cHe\u2019s gotta stick to his guns but I don\u2019t think he\u2019d be disappointed if he took a peek at this one.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tDirector Andrew Stanton, who has written on all five films, also weighed in, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s his choice \u2014 it\u2019s the end of the Andy years and he can end it with Andy, but we\u2019ve got another trilogy with Bonnie,\u201d who is the child at the center of Toy Story 4 and 5. He added, \u201cIt\u2019s for him to miss out on.\u201d Producer Lindsey Collins went the furthest, questioning, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to see the little girl\u2019s room, Quentin?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tToy Story 5 sees Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang facing an existential threat when Bonnie gets a tablet, named Lilypad, and starts spending all of her time on a screen instead of playing with toys. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s something that\u2019s not going away \u2014 it\u2019s like television for my parents when they described it coming into homes in the \u201950s, and they were still grappling with it 15 years later when I was born,\u201d Stanton said of choosing to focus this film on a tech versus toys battle. \u201cI feel like it was similar, we\u2019re just going to be grappling with it for a while until we figure out how to balance it. It\u2019s a messy thing that\u2019s perfect for drama.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJoan Cusack, who returns as the voice of Jessie and finds herself as the film\u2019s main character this time around, said she was \u201camazed that they took that on. The first thing I said when I watched the movie was, \u2018I can\u2019t believe they took on tech! Like how did they do that?\u2019 And I think they did it in such a beautiful way because at the end of the day, there\u2019s nothing better than laughing with a friend who really gets you and you get them. There\u2019s no technology in the world that can beat that feeling and it\u2019s just amazing that they were able to capture that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tGreta Lee voices Lilypad, revealing that she considered the voices of Siri and Alexa in her process but \u201cby the end when my kids saw the trailer they were like \u2018Mom! It\u2019s you!\u2019 And I was like, \u2018What?!\u2019 They\u2019re like, \u2018Mom it sounds just like you.\u2019 I was like, \u2018What! I did some deep character work, what are you talking about?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Tom Hanks and Tim Allen returning as the iconic Woody and Buzz, and Conan O\u2019Brien, Craig Robinson and Shelby Rabara also voicing new additions, it\u2019s a star-studded group \u2014 all the more so with Taylor Swift providing original song \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d to the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tSwift made an appearance at the premiere<\/a> \u2014 even taking the stage to sing both the new tune and \u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me\u201d alongside Randy Newman \u2014 as Docter revealed the song \u201call happened in secrecy and suddenly [it was] whoa, what\u2019s happening?\u201d and Morris added that a Swift feature \u201cwasn\u2019t in the original plan\u201d for the movie. <\/p>\n

\n\tWith the song being a tribute to Jessie in particular, Cusack noted, \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful song, I think it\u2019s really good. And hopefully means that more people come to the movie because it\u2019s such a good movie.\u201d <\/p>\n
