\n\tStaffers have taken to calling it\u00a0\u201cBlack Thursday.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn May 28, a half-dozen senior producers and correspondents at \u201c60 Minutes<\/a>,\u201d the longest-running and highest-rated news program in the country, were unceremoniously\u00a0shown\u00a0the door. Correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, as well as executive producer Tanya Simon and executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, were among them. The firings were\u00a0carried out by Bari Weiss<\/a>, the editor-in-chief of CBS News<\/a>, who\u2019d\u00a0clashed with Alfonsi\u00a0in\u00a0December over her \u201c60 Minutes\u201d report \u201cInside CECOT,\u201d which told the stories of Venezuelan migrants who\u2019d suffered horrific abuse at an El Salvadoran prison after being deported there by the Trump administration. Weiss pulled the piece hours before it was set to air,\u00a0demanding<\/a>\u00a0it include the perspective of Stephen Miller or another high-ranking Trump official.\u00a0In an email to her colleagues, Alfonsi said she\u2019d already made multiple requests to officials for comment, and that Weiss\u2019 move was \u201cnot an editorial decision, it was a political one.\u201d She added, \u201cIf the administration\u2019s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a \u2018kill switch\u2019 for any reporting they find inconvenient.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThat same day\u00a0in May, Weiss installed\u00a0Nick Bilton<\/a>, a tech columnist and reporter with no broadcast journalism experience, as Simon\u2019s successor at the helm of \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d Weiss and\u00a0Bilton\u00a0had grown fond of each other while collaborating on\u00a0numerous\u00a0documentary projects for Netflix that never\u00a0saw the light of day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThen, on June 1, Scott Pelley, a 37-year CBS\u00a0newsman\u00a0and the de facto face of the network, attended an all-hands meeting with Bilton and the rest of the newsmagazine\u2019s staff (Weiss was noticeably absent). Frustrated by the firings and the lack of any explanation to staff \u2014 particularly\u00a0about\u00a0the ouster of Simon, the daughter of legendary \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent Bob Simon \u2014 Pelley questioned Bilton\u2019s credentials and accused Weiss of \u201cmurdering \u201860 Minutes.\u2019\u201d The following day, Pelley was fired in a\u00a0scathing letter<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Bilton\u00a0accusing him of \u201cremarkable incivility and contempt.\u201d That left \u201c60 Minutes\u201d with only three correspondents\u00a0(down from seven)\u00a0following the\u00a0resignation of Anderson Cooper<\/a>, a 20-year veteran of the program, in February.\u00a0(A CBS News spokesperson says, \u201cCBS News is not able to say why we parted ways with any one person due to HR and legal considerations.\u201d)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u00a0spoke with six former \u201c60 Minutes\u201d staffers, including award-winning correspondents, producers and executives, about the chaos that\u2019s unfolded there under Weiss, a former op-ed columnist and founder of\u00a0The Free Press\u00a0who had no broadcast journalism \u2014 and scant investigative reporting \u2014 experience prior to being given the keys to CBS News.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have to acknowledge that \u201860 Minutes\u2019 needed a bit of a facelift, and there were potentially positive ways to improve the program, but it\u2019s the way they have gone about it,\u201d a former \u201c60 Minutes\u201d staffer\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cYou don\u2019t give a facelift with a fucking machete.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe opening salvo came on July 1, 2025. On that day, CBS News\u2019 parent company, Paramount Global, chose to settle\u00a0what critics call a\u00a0baseless\u00a0$16 million lawsuit brought by President Trump against \u201c60 Minutes\u201d over an October 2024 interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris that was lightly edited for broadcast.\u00a0(Trump broke with decades-long tradition and refused to sit down for his own \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview during the campaign.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe timing was curious, to say the least. Paramount had an\u00a0$8 billion\u00a0merger pending with David Ellison<\/a>\u2019s Skydance Media that\u00a0required\u00a0FCC approval, and FCC\u00a0chairman\u00a0Brendan Carr, an outspoken Trump loyalist, had\u00a0opened up\u00a0a \u201cnews distortion\u201d inquiry into \u201c60 Minutes\u201d over the Harris interview. Six days after the Trump settlement, the Paramount-Skydance merger was complete, and Ellison, a Trump ally,\u00a0was in charge of\u00a0CBS. One of his first big moves\u00a0there\u00a0was choosing not to renew the contract of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d host Stephen Colbert<\/a>, three days after\u00a0Colbert called the Trump settlement \u201ca big fat bribe\u201d;\u00a0the second was appointing Kenneth Weinstein, a Trump adviser and chair at the conservative think tank Hudson Institute, as CBS News\u2019 ombudsman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTrump filed a lawsuit that everybody laughed at\u00a0\u2014\u00a0about editing\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and you\u2019d never think he could win that lawsuit in court, but he basically makes your lawyers impotent,\u201d explains Lowell Bergman, the celebrated former \u201c60 Minutes\u201d producer. \u201cHe has a habit of filing lawsuits that he can\u2019t win, and now that he\u2019s the president of the United\u00a0States,\u00a0he has a lever and\u00a0can\u00a0win, so it\u2019s a form of extortion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBergman joined \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in 1983 and, working with correspondent Mike Wallace, produced dozens of high-impact stories over his 14-year tenure \u2014 including an interview with tobacco-industry whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand that was dramatized in the 1999 film \u201cThe Insider.\u201d<\/a> (Bergman\u00a0was played\u00a0by Al Pacino.) He won a Pulitzer Prize with\u00a0The New York Times in 2004 and teaches journalism at UC Berkeley.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a bizarre twist, Chris Wallace, the former Fox News anchor and son of Mike Wallace, is a senior adviser to\u00a0RedBird\u00a0Capital Partners, which provided\u00a0$2 billion\u00a0in financial backing for Skydance\u2019s Paramount takeover. He declined to comment on the state of \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d writing, \u201cAs an adviser at\u00a0RedBird\u00a0Capital, which has an interest in Paramount, I don\u2019t feel comfortable commenting on that.\u201d When I mention this to Bergman, he laughs and says, \u201cSounds about right to me.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBergman has a history with Trump too. Though he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0produce the segment,\u00a0Bergman was there when Wallace conducted a\u00a0sit-down interview<\/a>\u00a0with Trump on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d\u00a0in 1985,\u00a0which served as the real estate scion\u2019s big coming-out party. He recalls trying to give Wallace a tip about a criminal complaint concerning Trump, Roy Cohn, the Genovese\u00a0crime\u00a0family\u00a0and the delivery of cement during the construction of Trump Tower. While Bergman was talking to Wallace, he claims, a producer intervened and told him, \u201cWe\u2019re not doing that kind of story.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[Trump]\u00a0has always wanted to be a celebrity.\u00a0He is a celebrity. And\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0living in a world that we all now know is that of a reality-TV star\u00a0who\u2019s\u00a0constantly trying to rescript things that\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0said,\u00a0or go backwards,\u201d says Bergman. \u201cThe issue here is the open attempt by the president and the White House to destroy parts of the media that disagree with him. This has never happened before.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSteve\u00a0Kroft, who was a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent for 30 years until retiring in 2019, echoes Bergman\u2019s assessment. He believes that Trump has had it out for the newsmagazine since the Harris piece, and that Ellison and Weiss haven\u2019t\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0a desire to stand up to him. Ellison is, after all, still seeking FCC approval of Paramount-Skydance\u2019s\u00a0$111 billion\u00a0acquisition<\/a> of Warner Bros. Discovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis started as an argument between Trump and the show over the Kamala Harris piece, and the president of the United States made it very clear that he\u2019d like to see this broadcast go away,\u201d Kroft\u00a0says. \u201cHe wanted to do away with it, and\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0intimated that from that point on. Some of the ruthlessness is coming directly from the president\u00a0as a way to\u00a0influence and make sure that Bari and David Ellison fall in line.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIndeed, Trump has posted dozens of messages to Truth Social excoriating \u201c60 Minutes\u201d and attacking everyone from Pope Leo to Marjorie Taylor Greene over the program\u2019s segments. Shortly before Pelley was fired, Trump went after him during a podcast appearance, saying he was \u201cterrible\u201d and part of a \u201cgang of crooked, stupid people that don\u2019t care about our country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Trump administration is concerned with the coverage of the Trump administration. And \u201860 Minutes\u2019 has been tough on the first and second Trump administrations and are not afraid to call them out on things, and I don\u2019t think this administration wants to tolerate it,\u201d Kroft reasons. \u201cThat\u2019s why you\u2019ve seen this whole thing blow up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tEllison\u2019s third big swing at CBS came in October, when he purchased\u00a0The Free Press\u00a0for $150 million, folded it into CBS News and tapped Weiss, a media provocateur who\u2019d made a career out of targeting the \u201cwoke\u201d left and the mainstream media, as CBS News\u2019 editor-in-chief, reporting directly to him.\u00a0Despite having\u00a0little\u00a0background in television\u00a0journalism,\u00a0Weiss was placed in charge of CBS News and its\u00a0crown jewel, \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d\u00a0which Don Hewitt and Bill Leonard debuted in 1968.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe problems began almost\u00a0immediately. On the night of Jan. 5, during Tony Dokoupil\u2019s first official day as anchor of \u201cCBS Evening News,\u201d Weiss\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0added\u00a0lines to a segment on the U.S. military\u2019s capture of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro that cast the actions of the Trump administration in a more positive light. \u201cThis was unusual \u2014 the network chief does not typically edit scripts directly \u2014 but Weiss was the new boss,\u201d reported\u00a0Vanity Fair.\u00a0Two nights later, \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d aired\u00a0a fawning segment<\/a>\u00a0on Secretary of State Marco Rubio that concluded, \u201cMarco Rubio, we salute you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThat meddling is said to have extended to \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d a program that prides itself on its editorial independence. After her firing\u00a0last month, Alfonsi issued a blistering statement accusing Weiss and network leadership of \u201ca deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting, and it sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom.\u201d Vega alleged the same on her way out the door, writing she\u2019d \u201cexperienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories.\u201d Pelley said Weiss injected \u201cfalsehoods and bias\u201d into his stories, including a piece on the ICE crackdowns in Minnesota, telling<\/a>\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0that she demanded he \u201cmake the protesters look more violent\u201d and describe Ren\u00e9e Good, who was shot to death and then mocked by ICE agents, as \u201cdriving toward the officer,\u201d which Pelley said was contradicted by video evidence. (A CBS News spokesperson disputes Pelley\u2019s claim, characterizing Weiss\u2019 suggestions as part of \u201can editorial back-and-forth\u201d with \u201cno political motivation.\u201d)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou have three respected \u201860 Minutes\u2019 journalists saying that Bari or her lieutenants have tried to insert misstatements in their stories,\u201d says Betsy West, who oversaw \u201c60 Minutes\u201d as senior vice president of CBS News from 1998 to 2005. \u201cShe pulled a factual and legally\u00a0vetted story about the conditions in Venezuela prisons just because the administration\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0give a comment,\u00a0essentially giving\u00a0them veto power by not talking. News staff members at morning meetings that are supposed to be a rundown of the news say they often devolve into grievance sessions about Mideast politics or candidates\u00a0[Weiss]\u00a0opposes. It feels like she and the people she reports to are trying to check the independence of \u201860 Minutes\u2019 and ultimately undermine the free press that undergirds our democracy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to the claims made by Alfonsi, Vega and Pelley, Weiss drew criticism for her actions surrounding last month\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview with Israeli\u00a0prime\u00a0minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Though \u201960 Minutes\u2019 correspondent Lesley Stahl had spent months trying to land the sit-down, the interview was\u00a0ultimately conducted\u00a0by\u00a0Major Garrett, a CBS correspondent who doesn\u2019t work\u00a0for\u00a0\u201c60 Minutes.\u201d\u00a0It was widely criticized for not pushing back at a number of Netanyahu\u2019s more dubious claims.\u00a0As the\u00a0New York Post\u00a0reported<\/a>, Weiss gave Netanyahu his choice of interviewer \u201cas part of a last-ditch effort to clinch the interview for the network.\u201d The segment earned Weiss personal praise from former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren, who\u00a0tweeted<\/a>, \u201cThank you, Bari Weiss<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRome Hartman was a producer at \u201c60 Minutes\u201d for more than 25 years, working on more than 160 pieces, mostly with Stahl.\u00a0He retired from the show in 2025, just prior to Weiss\u2019 arrival. \u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0never spoken with Bari Weiss, so I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0imagine what her motives are.\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0an opinion journalist,\u201d Hartman says. \u201cThere\u2019s a valid and important place for opinion journalism, but that\u2019s not what\u2019s necessary to run a news organization that prides itself on playing it straight.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know she\u2019s proudly pro-Israel, and fine. But\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not the position that the leader of an objective news organization ought to be taking,\u201d\u00a0Hartman maintains. \u201c\u201860 Minutes\u2019 has neither been pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just tried to tell the stories. There have been scores of Middle East pieces on \u201860 Minutes\u2019 \u2014\u00a0I did a few of them with Lesley Stahl. It was always our mission to play it straight. She comes in as a self-declared \u2018Zionist fanatic,\u2019 and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0sorry, but that should disqualify her from playing an editorial role in CBS News coverage of Israel. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0qualify her for it; it should\u00a0disqualify\u00a0her for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBetween the firings and the allegations of editorial interference and kowtowing to the Trump administration, Hartman is stunned by the damage Weiss has inflicted on the venerable newsmagazine.\u00a0\u201cI know the place inside and\u00a0out,\u00a0and I care about it deeply,\u201d he says. \u201cThis last week has been, for me, like watching an arsonist burn down my professional home and not really having the means to do anything about it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWeiss\u2019 dismantling of \u201c60 Minutes\u201d is even more puzzling considering how well it was doing. Under Simon\u2019s leadership, it was the top-rated news show in the country, drawing 9.1 million weekly viewers \u2014 a 9% increase from the previous year. On May 21, just a week before Black Thursday, CBS released\u00a0a glowing press release<\/a>\u00a0touting how \u201c60 Minutes\u201d made history as the\u00a0No. 1 news show for 52 consecutive seasons, writing that it \u201creached new heights across digital and social media as audiences turned to \u201860 Minutes\u2019 across every major platform in record numbers: 2.5 billion video views, over 105 million engagements, and adding nearly 17 million followers across platforms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDigital engagement was up dramatically last year with \u201860 Minutes\u2019 stories under Tanya\u2019s one year of being in charge,\u201d says Hartman. \u201cIt was innovating, reaching new audiences, finding people on the devices where they\u2019re getting their news, and even the 7 p.m. audience on Sunday nights was growing, and there aren\u2019t many programs of any kind that can say that other than NFL football.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring his\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0after his ouster, Pelley provided some context for his fiery statements directed at\u00a0Bilton\u00a0during that\u00a0tumultuous\u00a0all-hands\u00a0meeting. The day prior, \u201cNick Bilton\u00a0wrote\u00a0an email<\/a> to the staff, introducing himself. And it was so insulting. He told us that it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a01968 anymore, and he helpfully noted that gasoline\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0cost 32 cents anymore, suggested that we had all been frozen in amber in 1968 when the program first went on the air, and that nothing had improved.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tPelley also defended his actions during the all-hands to the\u00a0Times, saying he was only asking \u201chard questions\u201d during a meeting \u201cabout whether \u201860 Minutes\u2019 was even going to survive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cScott wasn\u2019t shouting at him or physically intimidating the guy \u2014 he was doing exactly what he\u00a0should\u2019ve\u00a0done in the best tradition of the best \u201860 Minutes\u2019 correspondents,\u201d Hartman says. \u201cAnd if Nick Bilton is such a snowflake that he can\u2019t possibly tolerate a voice of challenge\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and if Bari Weiss has to hide behind his skirts\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that does not speak well of how he\u2019s going to run the place or how she\u2019s going to run the place.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLast week, longtime correspondents Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0be staying at \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d The trio also acknowledged how demoralizing and disheartening the recent spate of firings, and the lack of explanation for them, has been.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe have had a hard time deciding whether to stay at\u00a0\u201860 Minutes,\u2019\u201d the three journalists said in\u00a0a letter\u00a0to\u00a0their colleagues.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0still deeply upset by the firings of Tanya and\u00a0Draggan, strong leaders who everyone respected. As far as we can tell \u2014 because no explanation has ever been offered, they were expelled because they fought for our \u201860 Minutes\u2019 values and stood up to protect our independence and integrity.\u00a0Newsrooms are not supposed to be run like dictatorships. Collaboration and argument are the way we have always worked at \u201860.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThey concluded, \u201cWe don\u2019t want to see \u201860 Minutes\u2019 die.\u00a0\u2026 If we can continue doing the work that made this show what it is \u2014 committing acts of independent, fearless journalism and storytelling \u2014\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0here for it. If not, we leave.\u201d (Ellison\u00a0reportedly\u00a0reached\u00a0out to Stahl<\/a> on Monday to assure her that \u201c60 Minutes\u201d would\u00a0retain\u00a0its \u201ceditorial independence,\u201d and apologized for the\u00a0chaos.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKroft says he was \u201cvery happy\u201d to see Stahl, Whitaker and Wertheim stay at the newsmagazine while lamenting the callous way Weiss has treated the senior \u201c60 Minutes\u201d staffers\u00a0she\u2019d\u00a0gotten rid of.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat\u00a0[callousness]\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0come as a surprise to me at all.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been hearing about this from staff members for the past six months or so,\u201d Kroft says. \u201cThey\u2019ve\u00a0been shameless in their directions and shameless in their actions. I hope\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to\u00a0come to an end, but I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a great deal of confidence in Bari Weiss to do what she says that\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0going to do. She\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0done it so far. I think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to be more of the same, and\u00a0it\u2019ll\u00a0be interesting to see how much Lesley, Bill and Jon will put up with.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLooming over everything is Paramount-Skydance\u2019s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which includes CNN. Last December,\u00a0The\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that in private meetings, Ellison \u201coffered assurances to Trump administration officials that if he bought Warner, he\u2019d make sweeping changes to CNN.\u201d Days after the\u00a0Journal\u2019s story published, Trump\u00a0publicly stated, \u201cIt\u2019s imperative that CNN be sold,\u201d and called its leadership a \u201cdisgrace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Tuesday, Axios\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that Ellison will be tapping Weiss to \u201coversee all news\u00a0editorial\u00a0across both CBS News and CNN\u201d should the acquisition go through. All six former \u201c60 Minutes\u201d staffers who spoke to me expressed worry that\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0happening at CBS News could be a harbinger of things to come at CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKroft\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0so sure. \u201cI have a feeling that Bari will not be overseeing \u201860 Minutes\u2019\u00a0for very\u00a0much longer. I think once the deal gets done with Warner Bros., people will demand that she be let go or move into another position,\u201d he says. \u201cEverything she\u2019s touched has\u00a0turned\u00a0to shit.
