US Park Police opened an investigation on Thursday into giant markings of the numbers \u201c8647\u201d \u2013 which have been associated with opposition to President Donald Trump \u2013 on the grass of the National Mall.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, which manages the National Mall in downtown Washington, described the incident as \u201cderanged vandalism\u201d and said it \u201cwill not be tolerated\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny threat against the president is taken very seriously by the department, and our US Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,\u201d the spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The Trump Justice Department has claimed previously that the numbers \u201c8647\u201d constitute a threat to the president \u2013 \u201c86\u201d meaning to kill and \u201c47\u201d a reference to Trump being the 47th president.<\/p>\n
Former FBI director James Comey, an outspoken political opponent of Trump, was indicted in April for allegedly threatening the Republican president in an Instagram post that showed the numbers \u201c8647\u201d spelled out in seashells.<\/p>\n
