The Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> have spent much of the first half of the 2026 MLB<\/a> season trying to navigate around key absences. Few have been more significant than Alejandro Kirk<\/a>\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The two-time All-Star catcher has been sidelined since early April after suffering a dislocated and fractured left thumb on a foul tip against the Chicago White Sox<\/a>. The injury forced Toronto to lean heavily on Tyler Heineman<\/a> and rookie Brandon Valenzuela behind the plate while Kirk worked his way back.<\/p>\n

Kirk continued his rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday. But in anticipation of his return to the majors, the Blue Jays made a notable adjustment to their original plan.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic\u2019s Mitch Bannon, Kirk was initially scheduled to catch for Buffalo on Thursday but instead served as the designated hitter<\/a>. He still made an impact, ripping a stand-up double in the second inning. However, the change raised questions about Toronto\u2019s plans heading into this weekend\u2019s series against the New York Yankees.<\/p>\n

One possible explanation is workload management. The Blue Jays are scheduled to face left-hander Ryan Weathers<\/a> on Friday, and keeping Kirk out from behind the plate Thursday could allow him to enter the weekend fresher if Toronto decides he is ready to rejoin the major-league roster.<\/p>\n

Kirk was one of Toronto\u2019s most productive players in 2025. He appeared in 130 regular-season games, batting .282 with 15 home runs and 76 RBIs while earning an American League All-Star selection.<\/p>\n

Kirk remained a high-level performer in the playoffs, helping power the Blue Jays\u2019 postseason run with five home runs and 13 RBIs. He also hit .308 in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His 2026 season hasn\u2019t had a chance to gain momentum. Before his injury, Kirk appeared in just five games and hit .150 with one home run.<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays have not officially announced a return date, but Thursday\u2019s adjustment suggests the finish line is near. After more than two months without their starting catcher, Toronto could soon welcome back one of the most important pieces of its roster just in time for Friday\u2019s AL East showdown at Rogers Centre.<\/p>\n
