BOSTON \u2014 A federal judge ordered the Trump administration<\/a> on Friday to reinstall exhibits and signs on topics like slavery and climate change<\/a> that it had removed from parks and monuments nationwide because they \u201cdo not align with its preferred narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Boston issued a preliminary injunction<\/a> at the behest of groups representing park conservationists, historians and scientists, who argued that the U.S. Department of the Interior has been engaged in a \u201csustained campaign to erase history and undermine science.\u201d<\/p>\n

Removing these signs not only undermines \u201cthe integrity of the National Parks; it sets a dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization,\u201d Kelley said.<\/p>\n

Kelley said she was ordering the government to restore the signs within 21 days, \u201cby the 250th anniversary to properly honor the remarkable achievements of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attorneys for the plaintiffs \u2014 the National Parks Conservation Association, American Association for State and Local History and four other groups \u2014 did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did an Interior Department spokesperson.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump<\/a> signed an executive order in March 2025 targeting what he called a \u201crevisionist movement\u201d that portrayed the U.S.<\/a> as \u201cinherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s order directed the Interior Department to make changes to parks, monuments and memorials to address any \u201cfalse revision of history\u201d that the White House said had occurred in recent years.<\/p>\n

The plaintiffs had argued<\/a> that the Interior Department was removing signs and exhibits from parks in violation of congressional mandates governing how more than 430 national park sites should be operated, and had adopted an unlawful policy lacking any reasoned explanation for why various signs and exhibits must be removed.<\/p>\n
