After nearly 10 years and almost as many expansions,\u00a0Destiny 2\u00a0came to an end this week. With the \u201cMonuments of Triumph<\/a>\u201d update, Bungie has stopped supporting its shared-world shooter to focus on Marathon\u00a0and incubate other potential projects.<\/p>\n

Not every online game gets the opportunity to go out with some genuine fanfare, and it\u2019s something Bungie knows. The update\u2019s narrative thread is one of closure: NPCs important to past expansions wax poetic at the Guardian about the state of the galaxy, telling you how proud they are to have been by your side for your adventures. Some go off to new futures, others get admittedly touching payoffs<\/a>, but none of them are complete resolutions. For a franchise that\u2019s always been open-heartedly optimistic, it\u2019s fitting these closers feel like a \u201cgoodbye for now,\u201d whether you seek the characters out or pore through lore entries.<\/p>\n

That same mindset extends to the actual narrative. Before support ended,\u00a0Destiny 2 was in the early throes of its \u201cFate Saga,\u201d so Bungie couldn\u2019t help but tease what could\u2019ve been on the horizon. Once the update went live, it didn\u2019t take players long to discover that Guardians would\u2019ve eventually faced off against the Winnower<\/a>. This cosmic being goes back to Destiny 1\u00a0and was very much interested in a showdown \u201cat the end of time, between champions of Dark and Light. They need your violence because I exist,\u201d it gloats, while also getting a little meta during its monologue. \u201cWhen it\u2019s over, I won\u2019t abandon you. Take a breather. [\u2026] Let that vigor seep back into your bones. Get hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bungie\u2019s currently not working on a\u00a0<\/a>Destiny 3<\/a>,\u00a0as reports indicate it would be pretty expensive\u00a0to make. That hasn\u2019t stopped the game\u2019s community from clamoring for it, and a tease like this has only fueled that fire. News of the \u201cTriumphs\u201d update gave the game its highest number of players in months<\/a>, followed by its highest in years<\/a> once it finally went live. With the studio\u2019s future now hinging on Marathon\u00a0and whatever else it can spin up, it\u2019ll be a long wait for a new entry, if it ever arrives. No doubt PlayStation will want a big live-service game again; the question will be whether Bungie will get the chance to make that a reality.<\/p>\n

Until then, the only thing the studio can do is remind its community of one thing: Destiny is a mechanically great shooter with some inconsistent expansions and updates that\u2019s nonetheless earned its longer-than-expected lifespan. For everything they inevitably got wrong<\/a>, the two games would do something right<\/a> that got players back on board. At the same time it led the games industry into its worst impulses or made blunders of its own accord<\/a>,\u00a0 it had high highs, some of the genre\u2019s coolest weapons and powers, and incredible music.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s to\u00a0Destiny 2\u00a0and the Bungie staff who worked on it. See ya when I play ya, and thanks for all the memories and guns.<\/p>\n
