NEW YORK \u2013 If you\u2019re hoping for a Bruce Springsteen<\/a> presidential ticket in 2028, don\u2019t hold your breath.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a panel June 13 at Tribeca Festival<\/a>, where Springsteen was honored with the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award, the famously outspoken rock icon<\/a> dismissed any notion that he might one day run for political office.<\/p>\n

The suggestion came mid-conversation with Bono, who admitted that he sometimes fears that people on the left are losing touch with the working class. The U2 frontman asked Springsteen whether he fears that he\u2019s alienated any of his fan base with his political stance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cThere\u2019s the classic, \u2018Well, which side are you on?\u2019 You do have to make your stand and follow your beliefs, and have faith that they will be understandable by your fellow citizens. You have to believe that America is an argument and that finding some sort of common ground is possible. The leaders, at the moment, I\u2019m not sure I see anybody who has the capacity to come out and speak to all the people \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou!\u201d someone yelled from the audience, earning thunderous applause throughout the theater.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Springsteen said with a smile and a shrug. \u201cAt best, I\u2019m a concerned citizen. I sing my songs and wish for the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout the roughly half-hour conversation, Springsteen and Bono spoke about using their platforms for change.<\/p>\n

Right now, \u201cI\u2019m pissed off and angry, but in the past 50 years, I\u2019ve put together a band that was built for hard times like these,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cI put together a big body of work that was built for hard times, and I was always singing for the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 20-time Grammy winner also said he has faith that America will make it through this current divisive era.<\/p>\n

People must recognize \u201ceach other’s common humanity and dignity,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cThat is in short supply at the moment from, obviously, the top of our administration on down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late last month, Springsteen wrapped his Land of Hope & Dreams American tour<\/a>. Earlier this year, he released protest track \u201cStreets of Minneapolis<\/a>\u201d in response to the U.S. immigration crackdowns by federal officials that turned violent. Onstage at Tribeca, Springsteen dedicated his Voices for Social Justice Award to protesters across the nation. (The Trump administration has defended its actions in Minneapolis<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for this,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cI really want to accept this for all the citizens of Minneapolis and Los Angeles and Portland, who stood against the federal invasion of their cities. I\u2019ll take this and keep this in their name.\u201d <\/p>\n

At the end of the ceremony, Patti Smith came out to perform \u201cPeaceable Kingdom\u201d and \u201cPeople Have the Power,\u201d the latter of which featured backup from Springsteen, Bono and Smith’s bandmate Tony Shanahan. Springsteen then took the stage for a solo, acoustic rendition of his song \u201cLand of Hope and Dreams,\u201d which he dedicated to his wife, Patti Scialfa.<\/p>\n

Springsteen ended the event with a simple \u201cGod bless America, and go Knicks<\/a>,\u201d and overall, kept his jabs at President Donald Trump<\/a> to a minimum. Robert De Niro, who was on hand to introduce Springsteen, predictably took many digs at the commander in chief.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one insults Trump better than Bob,\u201d Springsteen joked, garnering cheers and laughter from the crowd.<\/p>\n

De Niro and Trump have had a long-running feud<\/a>. USA TODAY reached out to the White House for comment; in the past the president has posted on Truth Social that the Oscar-winning actor has “an extremely low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying.”<\/p>\n

In his introduction at Tribeca, De Niro praised Springsteen for his ability to \u201cmove people with the music he creates\u201d and \u201cgive voice to the powerless.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe uses it to lead the resistance,\u201d De Niro said. \u201cHe knows what the problem is and he names it: Donald J. Trump and his feckless enablers.\u00a0That’s\u00a0so important, because this\u00a0isn’t\u00a0about reasonable disputes on policy. This is about the corruption and megalomania of one person. Bruce Springsteen puts a face on it, and he does it with the words of a poet.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur democracy, our constitution, our rule of law are being challenged right now as never before by a reckless, racist, incompetent, treasonous president,\u201d De Niro said. \u201cSo tonight, we ask all of you to join with us in choosing\u00a0hope\u00a0over fear; democracy over authoritarianism; the rule of law over lawlessness; ethics over unbridled corruption; resistance over complacency; truth over lies; unity over division; and peace over war.\u201d<\/p>\n
