(ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It has 108 species that we&#8217;ve identified so far of birds that use the wetland,&#8221; Mr Ossinger said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an absolutely amazing place.&#8221;Paradise for birds<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wetlands were previously a feature of the landscape between Albany and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But many were drained in the early 1900s for the development of agriculture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The infrastructure used by previous farmers to drain the wetlands now helps control the sanctuary&#8217;s water levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have culverts that have been installed that allow us \u2026 to flood the wetland in winter and set it at a height to optimise the amount of habitat for the threatened fauna that we want to support,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That ability to manipulate the water levels futureproofs Eungedup Wetlands, so this can be a safe haven into the future in a drying climate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial shot of a wetland area.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/41ca8201b5e9e65709ac2a3123d9bda3.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Eungedup Wetlands were once a potato farm. (ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Zoologist Tim Gamblin said the wetlands now played host to a vast range of waterbirds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In particular, the migratory waders \u2026 they fly down from Siberia after feeding there in that summer,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They turn up at Eungedup and other local wetlands where the mud flats are exposed so they can feed up, put on weight and then fly back up to Siberia for the following summer to breed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitchers delight<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The sanctuary is due to open to the public by the end of the year and is expected to be a major attraction for bird watchers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man stands behind some timber frame.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3806813d4f8929232ebe196392fb944f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The bird hide the public will be able to access is currently under construction.\u00a0 (ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Ossinger said he hoped the project would spark others across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The bird hide is going to be the main point of access for school groups, travelling scientists or anyone in the community who is interested in seeing a functioning wetland,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re hoping that what we did here is mimicked or copied in other places all around Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A 100-metre interpretive trail will tell the site&#8217;s Indigenous and farming history, while also providing information about the ecology of the wetlands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tim Gamblin wears a blue shirt and a red and grey knitted hat. (ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Audio recording devices are also being set up strategically around the wetland to pick up the calls of the Australasian bittern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That means that when a bittern booms at dawn and dusk, the sound will be picked up by these very accurate monitoring systems,&#8221; Mr Gamblin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can see who was calling, where they were calling from and get a better idea of the population of bitterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Threat management<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A program is also in place to help manage threats such as foxes and feral cats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The very first photos we got were foxes all over the place walking around with water birds in their mouths,&#8221; Mr Ossinger said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We knew we needed to stop that straight away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A green house like device with a rock on top.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/63ae5a0c9b5f3721a2fd2db6101031d9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Felixer grooming traps are used in the area to manage wild cat populations.
