The release of a Florida-inspired energy drink by Barron Trump has been met with online criticism over the product\u2019s price point.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump\u2019s youngest son is one of the founders of the brand SOLLOS, which released its Yerba Mate Pineapple + Coconut beverage recently, priced at $39 for a pack of 12 cans.<\/p>\n

According to the brand\u2019s website, the company was \u201cstarted by a group of close friends ages 19 to 23 who grew up living in South Florida.\u201d Barron Trump, 20, is one of five directors named on a corporation filing with the state (1).<\/p>\n
The company website says the brand is \u201cbuilt around the Florida lifestyle,\u201d and that the beverage offers \u201csuperior taste and plant-based energy to support an active, outdoor lifestyle (2).\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a report on the social media backlash from SheFinds, other comments included, \u201c12 pack for $39? Insane,\u201d and \u201c$39 for a 12 pack? You serious?! That is absurd, who buys that? More expensive than a 12 pack of craft beer (4).\u201d<\/p>\n
In April, before the product was launched, the brand and the Trump family also faced online backlash. The Daily Beast reported that the company came under fire \u201cfor using a South American product and name while the Trump administration targeted Latinos via its current immigration policies (5).\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh wow, a family tied to anti-Latino rhetoric profiting off something deeply rooted in Indigenous (Guaran\u00ed), Paraguayan, and South American culture,\u201d the Daily Beast reported one commenter wrote (6).<\/p>\n

Yates in the Times of London describes it as having a \u201ccreamy mouthfeel,\u201d and, on first taste, a flavor profile that \u201cfelt like I was drinking from a bottle of tanning oil (7).\u201d<\/p>\n The writer says that after taking a second sip, he \u201cfound it to be … OK. Yes, Sollos is sweet, but not cloyingly so. And upon reflection, the creaminess makes sense, as if sipping a non-alcoholic pi\u00f1a colada.\u201d<\/p>\n The drink has 120mg of caffeine per can, which Yates notes \u201cis about the same caffeine ratio as Red Bull.\u201d<\/p>\n A 12-pack of Red Bull, however, costs about $17 to $25 on Amazon, Daily Beast reported.<\/p>\n Other offerings <\/p>\n The SOLLOS website says the brand was intentional in its move to release only one flavor.<\/p>\n \u201cMost brands launch with four flavors hoping you\u2019ll like one of them; we have been obsessing over one flavor until it was flawless,\u201d the website says.<\/p>\n While there is only one flavor of the drink, the company is selling other products on its website. There\u2019s a \u201cFrench Terry Bajas\u201d pullover for $95, a pair of terrycloth shorts for $40, a beach tote bag for $80 and a baseball cap for $30, all branded with the company\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n While those who aren\u2019t politically aligned with the Trump family might avoid buying the new energy drink, the company isn\u2019t unaware that its famous co-founder might impact consumers\u2019 decisions.<\/p>\n A recent post on the brand\u2019s LinkedIn page cheekily addressed the controversy.<\/p>\n \u201cNot much is bipartisan these days. Enjoying SOLLOS is,\u201d the post said (8). It was accompanied by promotional images of SOLLOS, overlaid with quotations from articles written about the drink.<\/p>\n One photo (9) of a bucket of frosty cans features a quote from Heather Schwedel, writing for Slate Magazine, that reads \u201cI guess I do think Barron and his twerp cofounders made a pretty good drink.
