{"id":703996,"date":"2026-06-14T18:30:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T18:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/703996\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T18:30:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T18:30:11","slug":"why-your-heart-rate-zone-2-may-be-misleading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/703996\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Your Heart Rate Zone 2 May Be Misleading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"0\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">I\u2019ve always kept track of my mileage and time spent on feet, but I hadn\u2019t paid much attention to any other stats until 2025, when I was returning to running after a three-month hiatus due to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a71038631\/running-injury-misconceptions\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a71038631\/running-injury-misconceptions\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"injury\" data-node-id=\"0.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">injury<\/a>. Wanting to proceed safely, I tried to make my comeback slow, committing to only easy runs and rebuilding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a70772924\/how-to-build-a-running-training-base\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a70772924\/how-to-build-a-running-training-base\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"my base\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">my base<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">I figured the best way to make sure I was where I needed to be was to run by my heart rate. I used the generally accepted formula MHR=220\u2013age, which, being 32 at that time, put my max heart rate at 188, and my supposed zone 2 anywhere between 113 and 132 beats per minute (BPM).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">But no matter how slow I felt like I was running, I was unable to keep my easy runs in my predetermined zone 2. My watch would categorize every one of my runs as zone 3 or even 4\u2014usually a combination of the two (and no zone 2). First I thought that perhaps that\u2019s what rebuilding fitness from scratch is like, but when it hadn\u2019t improved over time, I became confused\u2014I wasn\u2019t exhausted, my breathing was even, my pace was mostly conversational.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">If my runs felt easy, why was my watch insisting they weren\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Maybe it\u2019s the tech, I thought, so for even more precise data, I upgraded to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a35257647\/best-heart-rate-monitors\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a35257647\/best-heart-rate-monitors\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"clip-on heart rate monitor\" data-node-id=\"5.2\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">clip-on heart rate monitor<\/a> and swapped my Garmin Forerunner 265S for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a36490720\/best-garmin-gps-running-watches\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/gear\/a36490720\/best-garmin-gps-running-watches\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"570\" data-node-id=\"5.4\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">570<\/a>. Then I wondered, maybe there is something else going on with me that could explain the elevated heart rate. I started obsessing over various data points my watch was serving me\u2014heart rate, max heart rate, heart rate variation\u2014to understand what was going on in my body.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">I would not rest until I figured it out!<\/p>\n<p>The Problem Starts With the MHR Formula<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">I first questioned the very formula that threw me for a loop: MHR=220\u2013age. It\u2019s attributed to Samuel S. Fox and William L. Haskell, who published it in 1971, and which the Journal of Exercise Physiology later described as \u201ca superficial estimate, based on observation, of a linear best fit to a series of raw and mean data.\u201d Fox and Haskell\u2019s study wasn\u2019t original but rather a compilation of 11 existing ones, which included data from smokers and cardiac patients\u2014but also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/About-ACC\/Press-Releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/Allison-Peak-HR-PR\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/About-ACC\/Press-Releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/Allison-Peak-HR-PR\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" very few women\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> very few women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/About-ACC\/Press-Releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/Allison-Peak-HR-PR\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/About-ACC\/Press-Releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/Allison-Peak-HR-PR\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The American College of Cardiology\" data-node-id=\"11.0\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The American College of Cardiology<\/a>, after reviewing the archaic formula and analyzing over 25,000 stress tests, concluded the formula doesn\u2019t account for sex differences. A woman\u2019s heart, on average, weighs about 2 ounces less than a man\u2019s, and therefore beats about eight times more per minute to allow it to maintain cardiac output since it pumps less blood per beat. Women experience a more gradual decline in MHR, which leads to the formula\u2019s overestimation of MHR in younger women and underestimation in older women. A 2014 study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/about-acc\/press-releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/allison-peak-hr-pr#:~:text=Women%20in%20the%20age,their%20age.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/about-acc\/press-releases\/2014\/03\/27\/12\/29\/allison-peak-hr-pr#:~:text=Women%20in%20the%20age,their%20age.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American College of Cardiology\" data-node-id=\"11.2\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American College of Cardiology<\/a> added that \u201cyounger men have a lower resting heart rate and higher peak heart rate than women and men\u2019s heart rates rise more dramatically during exercise and return to normal more quickly after stopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While many other formulas exist, Fox and Haskell\u2019s is still the most widely accepted as accurate\u2014although because our individual MHRs differ drastically, any formula will only provide a rough estimate.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Smartwatch manufacturers like Garmin, for example, employ it as a starting point. \u201cFormula initializes according to 220\u2013age if we have no other information, such as in the case of a brand new user,\u201d wrote Garmin\u2019s Lead Product Manager, Joe Heyes, in an email, adding that default heart rate zones follow 10 percent increases starting at 50 percent for zone 1. \u201cAs long as the Auto Detection setting is on (which is the default), the max heart rate can start adjusting right away, but to set expectations, it can take a while (weeks) for max heart rate to drift to its true value.\u201d Garmin also allows you to input the number manually if you know your precise MHR.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"body-tip css-cmy8gu emevuu60\">TIP: If you\u2019re a Garmin user, you can find your heart rate stats by opening the Garmin Connect app, tapping More \u2192 Garmin Devices \u2192 Your Device \u2192 User Profile \u2192 Heart Rate &amp; Power Zones.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">How do you actually find out your MHR? The most precise way to measure it is in a lab with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62121738\/vo2-max-test\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62121738\/vo2-max-test\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"VO2 Max test\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VO2 Max test<\/a>, says Tamanna Singh, MD, director of the Sports Cardiology Center at Cleveland Clinic. If you\u2019d like to figure out your MHR outside of a lab, you could do a 30-minute run at threshold (a little bit faster than your race speed) and increase progression, then average your heart rate over the last 10 to 15 minutes, she suggests.<\/p>\n<p>The Problem Continues with the Heart Rate Zones<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Let\u2019s say we figured out the MHR by going for a run. Next up would be determining the heart rate zones. But if everything about our hearts is so different, shouldn\u2019t they also vary and not precisely follow the commonly used five heart rate zones that increase by 10 percent from 50 to 100 percent of MHR (zone 1: 50-60 percent of MHR, zone 2: 60-70 percent of MHR, etc)?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cHeart rate zones are individual, and our current algorithms do not account for that,\u201d Singh says. \u201cIt certainly would be inaccurate to believe that we all fit nicely into these 10 percent increments.\u201d Heart rate zones should be used only as an approximation, and you should not drive yourself crazy by trying to fit within them, she adds. \u201cThose formulas are really helpful for a guide, but I always hesitate to say \u2018train to a specific number\u2019 because day-to-day everything is different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/teamrunrun.com\/coach\/brant-stachel-kingston-ontario-running-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/teamrunrun.com\/coach\/brant-stachel-kingston-ontario-running-coach\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Brant Stachel\" data-node-id=\"20.0\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\">Brant Stachel<\/a>, professional coach and psychotherapist based in Kingston, Ontario, agrees; each zone has to start and end somewhere, so being a few beats off doesn\u2019t mean much. \u201cThere is nothing physiologically different between a heart rate of 140 and zone 1, and a heart rate of 141 and zone 2,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s no switch to all of a sudden completely different metabolism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">There are, of course, different training philosophies out there, some of which, for example, shift all five zones and <a href=\"https:\/\/rei.pxf.io\/c\/3006986\/1448521\/17195?subId1=ruw&amp;subId3=xid:{xid}&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Flearn%2Fexpert-advice%2Fhow-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/how-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"start at 55 percent of MHR\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"ab269a60-1460-44c0-8299-bd411c6c275d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/how-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html\" data-product-url=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/how-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html\" data-affiliate=\"true\" data-affiliate-url=\"https:\/\/rei.pxf.io\/c\/3006986\/1448521\/17195?subId1=ruw&amp;subId3=xid:{xid}&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Flearn%2Fexpert-advice%2Fhow-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html\" data-affiliate-network=\"{&quot;site_id&quot;:&quot;0edc3368-766f-4b81-be22-1eddee521647&quot;,&quot;network&quot;:{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Trackonomics&quot;},&quot;metadata&quot;:{&quot;trackonomics&quot;:{&quot;network_name&quot;:&quot;ir&quot;}},&quot;product_metadata&quot;:{&quot;0edc3368-766f-4b81-be22-1eddee521647&quot;:{&quot;network_name&quot;:&quot;ir&quot;,&quot;link&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/rei.pxf.io\/c\/3006986\/1448521\/17195?subId1={subid}&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Flearn%2Fexpert-advice%2Fhow-to-train-with-a-heart-rate-monitor.html&quot;}}}\" data-fp-affiliate-inline-link=\"true\" data-fp-affiliate-button-link=\"false\" data-vars-ga-product-price=\"$0.00\" data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=\"34b2096f-a15b-4c6e-952d-4fc46e6ec356\" data-vars-ga-link-treatment=\"(not set) | (not set)\" class=\"body-link product-links css-rgqwc2 e1aq0z090\">start at 55 percent of MHR<\/a> for zone 1, while others follow the 80\/20 rules of splitting runs into easy and hard and keeping a heart rate below <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62684352\/what-is-80-20-rule-running\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a62684352\/what-is-80-20-rule-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"75-80 percent of MHR for the easy portion\" data-node-id=\"21.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">75-80 percent of MHR for the easy portion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">But to me, all of them are an extension of a guessing game that still builds rigid borders around my zones. That\u2019s when I learned a better way to approach heart rate zones that doesn\u2019t use any formula at all.<\/p>\n<p>The Focus Shouldn\u2019t Be on Heart Rate\u2014But Rather on Effort<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Singh says that, like me, many of her patients come to her with worries about their heart rate being outside of the averages. \u201cWhat I usually will counsel my patients on is trusting and learning to communicate with your body,\u201d Singh says, \u201cremembering that the relationship you have is between you and running, not between running and a watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Sport Psychology Coach <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esaulmovement.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.esaulmovement.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Emily Saul\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\">Emily Saul<\/a> gives her athletes permission to pay a lot less attention to their watches. \u201cI don\u2019t have to know exactly what my heart rate is, for example, in order to know whether it feels comfortable or too high or lower than usual\u2014it sort of gives me indication of my perception of effort,\u201d Saul says. \u201cAnd if I focus on allowing myself to perceive that information, I then can choose to use my watch as a reference point, but certainly not the only source of information\u2014then the watch becomes a tool rather than a God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Stachel likes to remind his athletes that people from the \u201980s still ran very fast with none of the technology we have today. \u201cI want to frame it that way first: it isn\u2019t a mandate or a requisite to have this data. Can it be helpful? Yes, absolutely.\u201d In his coaching, he accounts for some of the data but is equally interested in his athletes\u2019 assessments of their runs. \u201cI try to teach my athletes that we want to triangulate across multiple sources: I want to see pace, I want to see heart rate, and I want to hear RPE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a29706103\/what-is-rpe\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a29706103\/what-is-rpe\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Rate of perceived exertion\" data-node-id=\"28.0\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rate of perceived exertion<\/a>, a subjective 1-10 scale of how a workout feels, offers an alternative way to evaluate runs. It correlates with breathing and the ease with which a runner can carry on a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>0: No exertion1: Very light exertion2 &#8211; 3: Light exertion (natural breath, can talk)4 &#8211; 5: Moderate (breathing more labored, can talk in short spurts)6 &#8211; 7: High, vigorous exertion8 &#8211; 9: Very hard exertion (breathing heavily, can barely talk)10: Maximum, all out (can barely breathe, can\u2019t talk)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">This scale can replace heart rate zones and help you learn to trust your body\u2019s signals. That\u2019s exactly what Singh, Saul, and Stachel have been getting at with running by effort and trusting my body. While I never thought of my runs in terms of RPE, I had run by feel before my injury\u2014all I had to do was go back to that and relate my runs on the training plan to the RPE scale.<\/p>\n<p>The Bottom Line? Define Your Own Zone 2<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">We\u2019re each different, so our bodies and hearts respond differently to exercise\u2014and while my friend, who runs similar paces to me, may have a heart rate in the 130s on our joined easy runs, mine can be much higher. \u201cTo focus on it as: because [your heart rate] is higher than other people\u2019s, there is something wrong, that just produces an unhelpful effect\u2014the reaction that your body has is one of needing to protect or guard, rather than simply be engaged in the running,\u201d Saul says. \u201cIf you have a history of having a running heart rate in the 160s and if you have the medical information that there\u2019s nothing wrong with your heart, then we\u2019ve got a big body of evidence that says that\u2019s pretty normal for your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">From the psychological point of view, stressing over not fitting neatly into running zones can create all kinds of anxiety. \u201cIf we can reframe that\u2026 there isn\u2019t something wrong with you, we can then focus on a belief that really amplifies your ability: your body doing what it is able to do in a healthy way so that we get a different response\u2026 which is one of feeling capable, empowered, and good,\u201d Saul adds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Just because my personality type requires examining all accessible layers of validation, I ended up going as far back as Strava would allow, to my pre-Garmin era of wearing an Apple Watch, comparing paces and heart rates at various parts of my previous trainings. It turns out my heart rate was simply always high.
