LONDON & NEW YORK (NBC News<\/a>) — An agreement has been reached between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Sunday, with Iranian state media broadcasting the announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cCongratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharif made a similar announcement minutes before Trump\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED,\u201d\u00a0Sharif said on X.<\/a><\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cBoth sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n

A signing was scheduled for Friday in Switzerland, Sharif said.<\/p>\n

No other details of the agreement were immediately available. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy foreign minister of Iran, said a memorandum of understanding is complete and the U.S. naval blockade against Iran will end Sunday night, according to Iranian state media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe immediate and permanent end of war and military operations on various fronts, including Lebanon, will be announced from tonight,\u201d Gharibabadi said, according to semi-official state news agency Tasnim.<\/p>\n

The agreement is intended to bring a halt to the U.S. and Israel\u2019s war against Iran, which began on Feb. 28, marked by the assassination of\u00a0Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>\u00a0and U.S.-Israeli strikes across Iran.<\/p>\n

A ceasefire was agreed in April to allow for negotiations, though both sides have continued with some strikes amid a dispute over the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a vital trade route through which some 20% of the world\u2019s oil passed before the war.<\/p>\n

Sharif said \u201cpre-implementation discussions\u201d would take place in the interim. It was not clear what that entailed.<\/p>\n

Trump, Iranian officials, and key mediator Pakistan said a memorandum of understanding was close heading into the weekend.<\/p>\n

In a story published Sunday, Trump told the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0that the deal would either be signed by the president electronically or by Vice President JD Vance in person.<\/p>\n

Vance said Sunday evening, shortly after Trump\u2019s announcement on Truth Social, that the logistics of the signing ceremony are still being worked out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly plan to be there, but it\u2019s possible the president himself could be there,\u201d Vance said on Fox News.<\/p>\n

He added that the deal was a \u201cnew leaf\u201d and that \u201cwe\u2019re going to keep working at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to say that everybody is going to sing Kumbaya tomorrow. It\u2019s going to take a little bit of time to learn the ways of peace, but I do think we took a major, major step tonight,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n

Sharif<\/a>\u00a0said Saturday that his country was \u201cpreparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal,\u201d after Trump earlier in the week said Vance could be sent to a signing ceremony.<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Iran have at times given very different outlines of the terms of the draft deal, with Trump and Iranian officials clashing Friday over the release of frozen Iranian assets.<\/p>\n

The Lebanese government and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah have not made any public comment on the agreement as Israel has targeted parts of Lebanon in a campaign to dismantle the proxy fighters who launch munitions at Israel just across its norther border.<\/p>\n

Israel, the United States\u2019 partner in the war with Iran, said\u00a0its military\u00a0<\/a>attacked Hezbollah targets in\u00a0Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs\u00a0<\/a>Sunday in retaliation an earlier attack on Israeli territory. Lebanon\u2019s Civil Defense Ministry said three people were killed.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Truth Social earlier Sunday, Trump said the strikes on Beirut \u201cshould not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll sides should stand down,\u201d he said. \u201cThere should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no immediate public comment from Israeli leadership.<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Iran had for weeks appeared to be nearing a deal, but reopening the strait had become a major sticking point in talks between the two nations. Iran briefly agreed to do so last month, bringing some relief to the oil-trading Gulf states that rely on it, but closed it again when the U.S. launched a blockade barring ships from entering or exiting Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

Trump administration officials had said that averting the risk of Iranian nuclear weapons would be central to any deal, eight years on from Trump\u2019s decision during his first term to withdraw from a previous agreement, reached under President Barack Obama, intended to limit Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

Thousands have been killed in the wider war that has consumed the region, with the highest death tolls reported in Iran and Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The U.S.-based rights group HRANA documented more than 3,600 people\u00a0killed in Iran<\/a>, including more than 1,700 civilians, since the U.S. and Israel first launched their attacks in late February, sparking a wider conflict in the region.More than 3,700 people have been\u00a0killed in Lebanon<\/a>, 36 have been killed in Gulf states, and 20 have died in Israel.
