SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 Seiya Suzuki was originally in the Cubs<\/a>\u2019 lineup a day after being removed from Saturday night\u2019s game with right knee discomfort<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the right fielder was scratched from the lineup prior to Sunday\u2019s loss as the Cubs decided to give him another day to recover after he worked out.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe feels good. We\u2019re just going to give him another day just to be safe,\u201d manager Craig Counsell said. \u201cHe went out and ran around. We just opted to be conservative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suzuki was in the middle of an excellent defensive performance Saturday night before he departed, throwing out a runner at second base and making a great sliding catch in right field. But the play he couldn\u2019t make is what forced him out, as he stumbled to the ground on an attempt to catch a ball that dropped for a hit.<\/p>\n

When the Cubs\u2019 lineup initially came out Sunday morning, Suzuki was in there, as the designated hitter. He was removed, though, by the time Counsell met with the media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be day to day,\u201d Counsell said. \u201cHe\u2019s optimistic that he\u2019s good to go. We want to be conservative. We\u2019ll just take it day to day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suzuki started the season on the IL with an injury to the same knee, sustained while he was playing for Japan during the World Baseball Classic. He didn\u2019t make his season debut until the Cubs\u2019 13th game of the campaign.<\/p>\n

On the year, Suzuki\u2019s offensive numbers are not what they have been, with his .772 OPS his lowest since his first season playing in the major leagues. But things have improved recently. He\u2019s on a 10-game hit streak, with three homers \u2013 including Thursday\u2019s grand slam in Denver \u2013 nine RBIs and six runs scored in that span. He had an RBI knock before leaving Saturday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Infielder Pedro Ramirez blasted his first career home run out to center field in Saturday night\u2019s win, a milestone for the No. 2 ranked prospect in the Cubs\u2019 organization.<\/p>\n

What was on his mind?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was running the bases, the first thing that came to my mind was my mom,\u201d Ramirez said through an interpreter after the game. \u201cAll I kept thinking was, \u2018I hope she\u2019s watching me.\u2019 And she actually was watching me, so that was good.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what did mom have to say?<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was really happy for me,\u201d he said. \u201c[She told me] to keep working hard and to keep doing things well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramirez has been doing things well. Called up to a big-league roster with -accomplished veterans entrenched around the infield, playing time hasn\u2019t been ample for the 22-year-old, but he has made something of his opportunity, with seven hits \u2014 three of them for extra bases \u2014 and a trio of walks in his 31 trips to the plate.<\/p>\n

Having already impressed his mom, he also has managed to impress his manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cPedro is a skilled player,\u201d Counsell said Saturday. \u201cHe plays with a slow heartbeat, just calm. He\u2019s got a high baseball IQ.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been pleased.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom should be pleased, too, not only because her son is playing well in his first taste of the majors, but because she has got a couple souvenirs coming her way.<\/p>\n
