Screen icon Robert De Niro<\/a> on Sunday tore into President Donald Trump<\/a> at a \u201cRise Up\u201d event in New York celebrating the First Amendment \u2015 and the crowd loved it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty close to being a free speech absolutist \u2015 even speech I don\u2019t like, and there\u2019s plenty of that around,\u201d he said. \u201cSo when I hear something I don\u2019t like, I use my own free speech to respond.\u201d <\/p>\n

The two-time Oscar winner then offered some real-world examples. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I hear Trump say, as he did a few days ago<\/a>, \u2018I don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation, not even a little bit,\u2019 I say, \u2018Shut the fuck up,\u2019\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

The audience cheered wildly at the callback to the \u201ctwo words<\/a>\u201d moment in the 1988 classic \u201cMidnight Run.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOn Wednesday, Trump said, \u2018I love the inflation<\/a>,\u2019\u201d the actor said, then asked for some help with the next line. \u201cNow say it with me.\u201d <\/p>\n

De Niro and the audience said it together: \u201cShut the fuck up!\u201d <\/p>\n

He offered one more example. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrump said he won the 2020 election. Ready?\u201d he said as the room again joined in: \u201cShut the fuck up!\u201d <\/p>\n

De Niro, 82, is a longtime Trump critic and has frequently gotten under the president\u2019s skin. <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, after De Niro countered the State of the Union speech with one of his own<\/a>, the president called him a \u201csick and demented person.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Niro on Sunday said it was difficult to love the United States given what it\u2019s become under Trump. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser,\u201d he said, adding: <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents and indirectly causing the deaths and suffering of millions more. I can\u2019t love a country that takes health care away from millions of people and uses that money to enrich their pals in the Trump-Epstein class. I can\u2019t love a country that sends out masked militias to shoot citizens in the streets, torture our neighbors, and separate families. I can\u2019t love a country that\u2019s led by a racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant. And let me just say it: I can\u2019t love the country that\u2019s led by Donald Trump and his sycophant Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Niro said he\u2019s loved his country most of his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to love my country again,\u201d he said. \u201cI want my country back.\u201d <\/p>\n
