Rhino is revisiting the first compilation of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s \u201cclassic\u201d quintet era \u2013 a push, it appears, ahead of a long-awaited, as-yet unreleased documentary on the band.<\/p>\n

1988\u2019s\u00a0Greatest Hits will be reissued on July 31 in a new double-disc edition on CD and vinyl. In addition to the plethora of smash hits like \u201cRhiannon,\u201d \u201cGo Your Own Way,\u201d \u201cDreams,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Stop,\u201d \u201cTusk,\u201d \u201cGypsy,\u201d \u201cLittle Lies\u201d and \u201cEverywhere\u201d \u2013 as well as the then-new tracks \u201cAs Long As You Follow\u201d and \u201cNo Questions Asked\u201d \u2013 the set now includes a bonus disc of 10 songs from the same era\/line-up; three were on certain CD pressings of the original set, and the rest include \u201cLandslide,\u201d \u201cThe Chain\u201d and the sole chronological outlier, the live version of \u201cSilver Springs\u201d from 1997 live album\u00a0The Dance.<\/p>\n

In just over a decade between 1975 and 1987, Fleetwood Mac radically reinvented themselves from cult-favorite U.K. blues band to world-conquering pop\/rock act. Band c0-founders Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass) and John\u2019s then-wife Christine McVie (keyboards\/vocals) joined up with singer\/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks, adding up to three talented singer\/songwriters with a tremendous instrumental interplay. Of course, most know that after the relative success of the band\u2019s 1975 self-titled album<\/a>, the band endured incredible personal strife \u2013 namely the breakups of Fleetwood\u2019s and the McVies\u2019 marriage and Buckingham and Nicks\u2019 relationship \u2013 and created 1977\u2019s Rumours<\/a>, packed with four U.S. Top 10 hits and seller of tens of millions of copies. The band reconvened several<\/a> times<\/a> in the late \u201970s and \u201980s, even as Buckingham\u2019s, Nicks\u2019 and Christine McVie\u2019s solo careers started to take off; the chapter closed when Buckingham departed the group after the release of 1987\u2019s\u00a0Tango in the Night<\/a>. (The group soldiered on in various line-ups \u2013 the two new tracks here feature Fleetwood, the McVies, Nicks and guitarists Rick Vito (lead) and Billy Burnette (rhythm) \u2013 but the quintet reconvened for tours in 1997-1998 and 2014-2018.)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Despite being inactive for nearly four years \u2013 Buckingham was ousted again in 2018 (replaced by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn), and Christine McVie died in 2022<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s strangely as if Fleetwood Mac never left.\u00a0Rumours has rarely left the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0200 in recent months; as of this writing, it\u2019s spending its 688th total week on that chart at No. 23. \u201cDreams\u201d went viral during the COVID-19 pandemic after TikTok creator Nathan Apodaca filmed himself<\/a> skateboarding to work while lip synching the song and swigging a bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice. The performance of \u201cSilver Springs\u201d from\u00a0The Dance routinely goes viral thanks to Nicks\u2019 thunderous presence in the live video, singing the song of wounded rejection directly to the ex-partner who inspired its writing. The duo\u2019s long out-of-print Buckingham Nicks<\/a>, which got them on Fleetwood Mac\u2019s radar, was reissued last year (making its CD debut) and sold exponentially more than it ever did on first release \u2013 just missing the Top 10 in America. (Buckingham even hinted that more ice had thawed<\/a> between the oft-estranged duo than fans might assume.)<\/p>\n

All of this \u2013 and the reissue of\u00a0Greatest Hits \u2013 all seems to gear up for the eventual release of an authorized documentary<\/a> including participation from those five classic members. The feature, made in partnership with Apple and directed by Frank Marshall, will more than likely premiere next year, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of\u00a0Rumours.
