Benjamin Bonzi beats Lorenzo Musetti in three sets on Saturday in Cincinnati.

Lorenzo Musetti<\/a> and Casper Ruud<\/a> both saw promising starts unravel in shocking fashion on Saturday at the Cincinnati Open<\/a>, where they each fell to inspired French opposition in their openers.<\/p>\n

In a morning thick with upsets at the revamped hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event, Benjamin Bonzi<\/a> rallied past eighth seed Musetti 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4) and Arthur Rinderknech<\/a> outlasted 11th seed Ruud 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the third round. Musetti and Ruud are ninth and 10th, respectively, in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, but they could slip further depending on results in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n

After recording his second Top 10 win of the season, Bonzi is up eight spots to No. 55 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The Frenchman, who also defeated Daniil Medvedev<\/a> in the first round at Wimbledon<\/a>, will next face Stefanos Tsitsipas<\/a> or Fabian Marozsan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bonzi\u2019s countryman Rinderknech scored his first Lexus ATP Head2Head win over Ruud after four previous attempts with a gutsy comeback. He saved both break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, when serving at 4-2 in the decider. For Ruud, the No. 13 in the PIF ATP Rankings, it marked just the second time in 29 matches this year that he has lost after winning the first set.<\/p>\n

Seventh seed Holger Rune<\/a> made it safely through to the third round by edging Roman Safiullin<\/a> 7-5, 7-6(5) and recording his 50th ATP Masters 1000 win. Last year, Rune held two match points in the semi-finals before falling to Frances Tiafoe<\/a> in a third-set tie-break.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just about accepting, but at the same time seeking for the best,\u201d Rune said when asked about easing into the tournaments. \u201cAccepting that it may not happen in the first match, but the only way to get it is if you work on it from the first round. I believe I can play some great tennis, so if I keep working it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

By improving to 3-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Safiullin, Rune set a third-round clash with Alex Michelsen<\/a> after the American rallied past Corentin Moutet<\/a> 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Rune, who is up to 14th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, is aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals<\/a> for the second time after his group-stage showing in 2023.<\/p>\n
