Darryn Peterson might be the most difficult evaluation in this draft.<\/p>\n

The talent isn\u2019t the issue.<\/p>\n

One former NBA general manager essentially summarized the league-wide discussion with a text message.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tricky one is Peterson,\u201d the former executive wrote. \u201cHe was consensus No. 1 all last summer and rightly so. He might be Kobe Bryant. But WTF happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

The first half of the text explains why Peterson remains firmly in the conversation for the top selection.<\/p>\n

The second half explains why the debate exists.<\/p>\n

Last week, I reported that a high-ranking league source believes the Washington Wizards\u2019 internal debate for the No. 1 overall pick has narrowed to two prospects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No specific names were provided. The shocker would be if Peterson isn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

Recent developments suggest the Kansas guard feels similarly.<\/p>\n

ESPN reported Monday that Peterson conducted a formal visit with Washington and does not plan to meet with any other lottery teams. A.J. Dybantsa, meanwhile, visited both the Wizards and Utah Jazz, owners of the second selection.<\/p>\n

Peterson averaged 20.2 points per game. When available, the 2025 Naismith Prep Player of the Year often looked like the best player on the floor.<\/p>\n

He also missed 11 of Kansas\u2019 35 contests, largely because of severe cramping episodes. That reality transformed what initially appeared to be a coronation into a legitimate debate.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what makes the decision to forgo additional team meetings and workouts intriguing.<\/p>\n

Does Peterson\u2019s decision stem from confidence he\u2019ll be Washington\u2019s choice? Following the ESPN update, one Jazz insider <\/a>reported that Peterson\u2019s camp is \u201cvery confident they are going #1.\u201d<\/p>\n

Or, rather than attempting to alleviate concerns, Peterson appears comfortable letting teams rely on the body of work already available. The situation is entirely open to interpretation, which mirrors how evaluators view Peterson\u2019s lone season at Kansas.<\/p>\n

At minimum, the choice to meet with the Wizards and no other teams serves as another reminder that the 6-foot-4 1\/2 guard remains firmly in the conversation at No. 1.<\/p>\n

The challenge isn\u2019t explaining Peterson\u2019s talent.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understanding what happened at Kansas.<\/p>\n

Unlike Dybantsa, whose freshman season largely reinforced his standing atop draft boards, Peterson\u2019s lone season with the Jayhawks created as many questions as answers.<\/p>\n

Several current and former executives, scouts and coaches who spoke with Last Man Standig in recent weeks offered varying opinions on the guard.<\/p>\n

The disagreement wasn\u2019t over his talent.<\/p>\n
