If there\u2019s one thing Donald Trump has been clear about
\nregarding the US deal with Iran, it\u2019s promising that it will be better than the
\none Barack Obama signed in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn’t pay for it like Obama did. He paid billions of
\ndollars,\u201d President Trump told reporters at the G7 summit in France this
\nmorning.<\/p>\n

Both deals, however, involve sanctions relief and unfreezing
\nIranian money – though the current White House says that will all depend on
\nIran meeting its obligations under the agreement.<\/p>\n

We were also briefed that one of the proposals still being
\ndiscussed is a $300bn (\u00a3224bn) fund to help rebuild Iran. Who would pay for that
\nwas uncertain, but the president has now dismissed the idea as “fake
\nnews”.<\/p>\n

There is undeniably some overlap. Both Trump\u2019s deal and
\nObama\u2019s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) involved inspections to
\nensure Iran doesn\u2019t develop a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

What neither deal has directly addressed is the political
\nplight of the Iranian people – they are no freer than before.<\/p>\n

The obvious difference, of course, is that Barack Obama
\nnever bombed Iran.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump did and said US strikes have destroyed much of
\nthe country\u2019s nuclear facilities and buried its stockpiles of uranium.<\/p>\n

But war has come at a cost. Iran launched attacks on many of
\nits neighbours in the region including Israel, further destabilising an already
\nvolatile Middle East.<\/p>\n

It also closed the Strait of Hormuz, pushing up energy and
\nfertiliser prices worldwide – that was new and hugely damaging.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Trump\u2019s deal – at least in the first phase being
\nannounced this week – focuses less on the detail of limiting Iran\u2019s nuclear
